The secret to a great garden is in growing good soil. We often forget that soil itself is made up of living organisms. Understanding these systems can reduce the amount of hard work required to grow good crops.
As a result of years of research and experience conducted by Jim O'Gorman, who runs his own backyard production in North Otago, Dirt Doctor seminars are designed to teach individuals how to make the most of their own resources. Essentially, we specialise in biological-intensive methods - maximum yield from minimum land - and our goal is to teach people the most fundamental, and these days, the most empowering skills one can have, which is the know-how needed to feed ourselves and our families.
Instead of spending time and money on quick and instant, but not lasting, remedies and supplements for your garden, Dirt Doctor teaches you the tried and true secrets for using what you already have on-site.
The sessions will be divided between on-site observation, assessment and demonstration, as well as hands-on experience with specialised tools and techniques.
COMPOST CREATION, Sat 2/10, 2-4pm or Wed 6/10, 5:30-7:30pm
Learn how to create a thermal compost that will effectively turn your food scraps and garden waste into the most valuable nutrients for your soil. To demonstrate, we will be creating a compost from scratch.
BREAKING GROUND, Sat 9/10, 2-4pm or Wed 13/10, 5:30-7:30pm
Bring home the knowledge you need to create productive and constantly improving garden beds using nothing more than the soil you have, basic design, simple tests and easy double digging methods.
SEEDLINGS FROM SCRATCH, Sat 16/10, 2-4pm or Wed 20/10, 5:30-7:30pm
Succesful seedlings are the key to a succesful crop. Learn to raise healthy plants by making your own seedling mix and knowing how and when to plant, prick out and acclimatise your seedlings for growth.
WEED MANAGEMENT, Sat 23/10, 2-4pm or Wed 27/10, 5:30-7:30pm
Make the most of your weeds and learn how they can be best used to benefit your garden. Learn when to weed, how to weed and why weeds are important for a productive garden.
MICROBE BREW, Sat 30/10, 2-4pm or Wed 3/11, 5:30-7:30pm
