Everyone keeps asking about where they can get locally produced organic layer mash in Auckland, therefore I have made it my personal mission to source some. I am excited to say I been successful. The feed is specially formulated by Frenz eggs for the free ranging and backyard flock. It contains a great mix of protein fibers and fats, and has been used by them for quite some time now with great success.

Please try some out and let me know what you think, available either through the Ooooby stall at the Grey Lynn Farmers Market on a Sunday or through www.chickensathome.co.nz

I also just worked out the stats on it and costs about $1.70 per week per bird, which means that your eggs end up costing you around $2 for a half dozen which is over a third less than the supermarket for organic free range!!! Plus your eggs are fresher and you know exactly where they came from.

I just wanted to add to this discussion that I have been told that the main importer into NZ of soy and maize (from whom the different feed mills buy) is now advising that it is impossible to guarantee that any soy or maize is GE free. The organic groups like Ceres and Biogro have been advised some months ago.

So it is timely to think about what you want to feed your chickens so they still lay (minimum 17% protein is needed for that - grains have about 8 to 10%). I guess no-one on here wants to eat chickens or eggs grown with GE'd corn or maize or soy.

It might be a good idea to start a thread about what home made mixes people feed which are free of soy and maize/corn.

Just want to say thank you to all of you who have contributed to this valuable discussion about where to source organic, non GE chook feed,  really appreciated reading your thoughts and advice, hoping the Frenz product is GE free - I did a quick search for info on whether the wheat you buy at supermarkets is GM, despite the wheat found in Oregon ??, it seems the wheat we are getting in NZ is GE free BUT it is  a  hybird product that has probably been sourced from chemical saturated stock, a bunch of seeds have sprouted in our paddock - I was worried I would be spreading GM seed everywhere, but now I think I will let them grow and hopefully, they will eventually loose their chemical impurities, after reading all your comments I searched for organic chook maize in nz and found this site http://www.kiwiorganics.com - I am going to give them a go
