Preparing Karaka berries 9 Replies

I have been gathering together a variety of recipes on how to prepare Karaka recipes, to ensure the poison is out. Wondering if anyone would like to share a successful recipe???

Thanks for the reminder Murray - have some seed, have put in the 'to plant asap' pile.

One I always have in the garden is NZ Spinach. Makes a great ground cover and love to eat

I'm putting in a 'food forest' style garden, and want to include as many NZ edibles as possible, especially on the ground layer. So far I've planted NZ watercress, Cook's scurvy plant, and NZ celery. They all seem to be doing well, and ducks haven't eaten them, so will plant more. Any other suggestions welcome!

Hi Murray, have always chewed on horopito when taking bush walks since a child, but have only discovered recently that it has medicinal antifungal properties.
Manuka gum is a sweet treat found on young branches (looks like a lump of damp icing sugar) and is good for coughs.

I would love to learn more on what's edible in the bush. Have regularly chewed on Horopito, Hebe shoots and eaten snow berries while tramping. What have others tried?
