Amy that is what I am hoping for building a bit of a closer community. It seems to me that it would be a bonus with a bit of a "neighborhood watch" aspect.
It can't hurt to know the people that live here and if we can count on each other in an emergency. I think that there may be something secure in that.

Margaret, Adding a bench or two for neighborly visiting is a good idea! I will have to think about that for the spring.

I love that part! The neighbors I may never have met will stop and ask or comment. Next season I have a plan to put bench seating in so that there is a gathering point for the sharing of a cuppa and conversation.

Margaret, My food plants are mostly in the front yard because that's where the sun shines. The back is all shade. One unexpected bonus is that people who I am pretty sure wouldn't usually stop to visit with a total stranger (me) do, because they want to talk about gardening. I've met a lot of neighbors that way!

I am unsure if this is an active group or not but I love the idea. I garden in my hell strip and yard. I plant veg and flowers all together and get a great deal of happiness from it all.

Do any FUFers know if there are any vegetables/fruits/herbs that do NOT attract deer?

I've got 2 persimmon trees, a lemon, lovage, sage, rosemary, parsley, Tuscan kale, and some herbs in amongst the flowers and shrubs (and weeds) in my front garden. It doesn't seems to attract any attention - anything goes in my rather scruffy neighbourhood :)
The main issue is making sure the edible plants don't get crowded out by the existing plants. I find perennials fit in better than annuals.
