how do i know when my sweetcorn is ready?

My sweetcorn has done really well this year but I notice the strands at the top are already going brown and yet the corn itself seems too small to be ripe - it wasn't put in until November. Dare I peel back a layer and take a peek? is this a sign of stress?? they are close to my water tank so do get watered, but not every day...help!

Pick just before you want to cook it ! Big pot of boiling water, add 1 tsp sugar - salt toughens it. Slather with loads of butter (b.. the chloresterol). Haven't tried microwaving - any tips ? think you just put in with the green leaves still around cob.

Thats right just cook in the microwave for a few minutes, it vary's in the size of the cob (leave the leaves on) when you can smell the corn cooking its ready stop the mirowave straite away as it will get tough if you second guess yourself, leave a minute for the heat to rest, you don't need to put anything on it its is great if you are trying to loss weight but butter never goes a miss either. Only cook one at a time as it dosn't take long and It throws the timing out.
  • Sweetcorn does have more than one kernel per plant...at least two and sometimes three dependent on how healthy the plant feels.
  • This discussion has been very interesting and is further convincing me to try corn next year! Does each plant only grow one corn cob or more than that? I'm quite interested in getting hold of some of the heritage varieties that you can use for popping corn - apparently they have *much* more flavour and are far more interesting than the bog standard store bought stuff.
  • We are eating our own sweetcorn every few days at the moment and it is still divine! But some of the cobs are very short, albeit covered in juicy sweet kernels. Is this because I was a bad mother when they were small and didn't water them and talk to them?? I'm after tips for next year because I will definitely grow them again...thanks in advance!

Yup - just stick it in, with the husks still on, and blast for 3 mins on high. I did it for the first time last week - SU-perb.

  • i have to say the first corn we ate of our own this season was sooooooo superior to any we've bought! thanks for the tips.
  • My sweetcorn are a bit behind as i was late to put them in as my first seeds were old and duds my corn has just started to develop the first male flower on one so i dont think they are far away from flowering but as i am inexperienced with this crop am not sure when they are going to develop yet.
  • Sweet corn ears should be picked during the "milk stage" when the kernels are fully formed but not fully mature. This stage occurs about 20 days after the appearance of the first silk strands. The kernels are smooth and plump and the juice in the kernel appears milky when punctured. Sweet corn remains in the milk stage less than a week. As harvest time approaches, check frequently to make sure that the kernels do not become too mature and doughy.
