Whats your favorite potato variety?

What are you successes and failures, interested to know what other people like to grow?

This season I planted agria, cliffs kidney and some maori potato. I got a very good crop, but i had a mystery rogue potato that outdid all my planted ones. They were a white roundish potato, had them with roast lamb and chicken the texture was moist and smooth, quite different to the dryish agria. Would love to know what they are, i'll start a quest to find my new favourite potato next season. Might try Rua first.

  • Unfortunately Sue they were too good and all got eaten. Agria are also very tasty, much better than shop bought. My mouth is watering remembering the last roast dinner we had.
  • Can you post a photo of the mystery potato as that might help identify it. I love Agria and have been told by a grower that it loves peaty soils which enhance its creamy colour. So your mystery potato might react differently in your soil . While in Melbourne recently I tried Dutch Cream which is quite like Agria and it mashed like a dream!
  • I looove the dramatic purple of the Uenuku Maori variety, but they're quite dry and have a funny texture, so I mainly use them in potato salads so the mayonnaise can liven them up a bit. I've also grown Rocket & Cliff's Kidney - Rocket lived up to it's name and gave us heaps of delicious new potatoes, Cliff's Kidney was ok but not as good as Rocket. This may also be due to soil quality / growing seasons etc, as they've been grown in the gardens of several different flats between the North & South Islands!
