Chickens or ducks?

I'd like to keep poultry and am pretty much a beginner. Can anyone briefly explain the pros and cons of chooks versus ducks?

  • We have both and I like them both. Our duck pen is at the other end of our orchard from the house and we have a large pond in a nearby paddock so they hardly ever come around the house. After having free range chooks for a number of years I finally put them in a movable dome ala Linda Woodrow as they just did too much damage to the garden. I definitely wouldn't recommend geese though - they really are messy and they like to hang out on lawns!
  • We have had 3 chooks since December last year and are enjoying them heaps. They do make a noise when they lay and egg, and they scratch up your garden if you leave it unfenced. They are very curious about anything you are doing in the garden, especially if they think it involves something to eat.
I've been wondering about ducks also, we get seasonal ducks with there ducklings at this time of year and they seem cute, but when they hang around they are very messy.

    Hi Susan,

Thanks for that. It's just good to get different people's opinions. I'm leaning towards chooks anyway, but it is good to hear what other people have to say.

    Cheers,

    Leanne.

  • Hi Leanne,

I have chickens, and adore them. I tried ducks, but they did not work out. Very noisy, constantly hungry, clumsy creatures. Cute for the first few days, but then just drove me nuts. Chooks, on the other hand, are relatively relaxing. They make a bit of a fuss when they lay an egg, but if you anly have girls this is one of the few times they are noisy - roosters are another story, although I enjoy their crowing! You can get a great range of chooks, so you have a variety of clours to look at. I only recently got my chooks (Feb this year), but they have fit in well and I now have lots of fluffy little babies, which the children enjoy. Good luck with your decision!
