Egg Troubles

Hey Team,

I got some chooky troubles. Our chooks have gone off the lay and are not broody. Only one is laying and that one is broken in the lay box when she lays (which has been happening since before Xmas). They have the same water, grit (cooks and crushed egg shells), roam area for scratching and access to commercial chook food when ever they want it. The only difference is with the heat there have been less greens and weeds to feed them. I can only wonder if in the heat they are taking a break? Most of the area they have access to is shaded through, so I am stumped. I noticed on one chook yesterday that she has a bald patch around her rear, but am not sure if this is not the norm as usually you cant see for the feathers.

Any ideas are welcome.

  • having had chickens for two years now! and quite the expert lol.  heat and malting and going off the lay have coincided
  • Have they got access to shell grit?  They need this to form their egg shells.

It is quite hot at the moment so they may slow down a bit.

Also intestinal worms and blood sucking bugs (lice & mites) affect egg production.

    • Yes, plenty of grit and the normal food - which is what makes it a bit peculiar
