maybe sick? maybe just broody?

Hi there, I need some help as Im not sure whats going on with my darling little Boss Hog. She is a 10 month old white sussex and has been up until now really healthy, active egg layer, boss of the coop etc. She lives with another light sussex and 4 brown shavers. About 3 days ago I noticed she was sitting in the nest box more than usual and thought she might be starting to go broody. As we dont have a rooster or want more chicks I took her off. She didnt give fight and she seemed very lethargic. It took her a while to stand. She then had some pellets and vomitted. She drank a bit and went back to the box. This has continued for the last few days with one more vomit that I have witnessed. When she does get up after I take her off the box she has some food, drink, pecks the others a little and then goes back. I thought it might just be broodiness but the vomitting and docileness has worried me. Her comb is still bright and I have checked her for mites/ lice and cant see any signs of them. Sorry for the ramble, but I guess you guys know whats its like to have one of 'the girls' not her usual self. Thanks, Felicity

  • Hi i have 3 light sussex. and the other day the same happened at my house .Not vomiting thou, but all what you described and i just took her to the vets for peace of mind and yes must be broody as was all well with her.
  • Thanks Mel. Her crop doesnt seem to be unusally hard, but I have been massaging it anyway (and she seems to like it!!) She is still very lethargic and only gets up when I get her up. I am going to try and put a little bit of oil down her throat. She ate a bit of bread today and is still drinking. She hasnt layed for three days now and there still doesnt seem to be any other symptoms. I even saw her poo and it was normal!! Thanks for the suggestion though.
  • She may have an impacted crop, check it to see if it feels overly full or hot. Give her white bread soaked in olive oil and give her crop a gentle massage. A couple of days of this and she should be fine, Id follow it up with plain yoghurt when shes recovered a little.
