Yes, She might go and continue to sit on the rest of the eggs, they might hatch. Not sure what to do about her attitude. Sometimes their brain doesn't kick in for a while that they are a mum. It's like someone elses kid arriving in your house expecting you to look after it. I often tuck chicks under other sitting hens, but watch them like a hawk for the first few hours.
She will go clucky again this season if you want to try again. :-)

damn, My hen hatched a total of one chick from a dozen eggs, then proceeded to kill it by pecking it to death. Better luck next year I guess. Hopefully she'll start laying again soon - there has to be an up side, right?

I Hi Nicki, it sounds like you have something taking eggs out of the nest at night, what ever it is, is probably eating them as well. Is your nest on the ground? Hedgehogs, rats, stoats,or weasels are all culprits of this. I put a 6 inch wide board up and it stopped this problem. I think in my case it was hedgehogs. They can't climb, this is why the board on it's side worked. They also eat chicks, snails and anything else they stumble across.

There was another egg sitting out in the run again today. Either our Doris (who is our chook sitting on a nest of 2 week old purchased fertilised eggs). So is she chucking the eggs out of the nest, or is she laying again, having had about 4 weeks off laying since she started going broody? Wierd....the egg was well away from the nest, although it could conceivably have rolled that far, I doubt it. If she is laying again, why doesn't she add her eggs to the bought ones on the nest?

I'm in Brisbane and I have a chook who is very clucky. After 3 weeks of sitting on the daily eggs, my friend gave me some fertilised eggs from her chooks. two days later my girl is back sitting on the fresh eggs and the fertilised ones are cold. Since she is losing condition, I have given up and locked her outside with food and water alone.. I hope to put her back with the other within a c\ouple days once I know she won't monopoloise the nests. Does anyone have any idea how long I should keep her out. PS the only reason she is seperate from the others is, the others need to lay so they need access to the nests. thanks Kay

Yes hens eat their eggs, its common if the egg is a dud (thin/misshaped shell etc) which is why you shouldnt feed them raw shells and egg (apperently) The egg might of been going bad (and risks infecting the other eggs) and since you returned it to her she to resorted to eating it.

Lynda mine free ranged from 5 weeks old. Now they think they own the place and even take on my cat for prime sunning position. They need somewhere to shelter/cover for protection to feel safe, comerical freeranged chickens have to have hedges for this other wise they wont freerange. Mine have under the deck.
