2000 plus people is good traffic. That is enough for an Ooooby stall to work quite successfully.

When Project Lyttelton started a ‘Farmers Market’ about 5 years ago they got underway before creating a charter. While an effort was made to source food produced locally exceptions were made in order to supply the range of food local people wanted to buy.

A labelling system shows whether the food is sourced locally, made by the stallholder, grown by the producer and whether packaging materials are environmentally friendly.

Since the Lyttelton market is a hybrid rather than a true Farmers Market I understand they have been granted ‘associate’ membership of the Farmers Market Assn.

A craft market, run by a separate organisation, is held in conjunction with the ‘Farmers Market’.

The markets are held at the local school, attracting crowds of 2 – 3,000 weekly.

Thanks for your question Fern. Ooooby is similar to a collective or co-op, so if these concepts are not permitted then it is likely that an Ooooby stall would also be prevented from that market. I suppose another way is to set up an Ooooby stall in a different location where there is regular foot traffic.

The local market in Apollo Bay is similar to Natalie & Daryl's comments about their market in Upper Hutt. You can only sell what you grow yourself. Collectives and CO-OPs (I've been told) are not allowed either. These rules have been in place since the local market started in the late 1970's. So my collective local food swap stall idea was halted after attempting to get it going in 2005. How would Ooooby be able to get around this?

weve been stall holders at Priongia and Tamahere Markets - when we migrate south I would be keen to join/ start an Ooooby Stall there.. will wait til all systems are go and look into the regulations at these markets in the meantime.

Hi Helen. Great that you could join us here. As soon as we're ready with finalising our systems I'll let you know. I am chomping at the bit to roll out more stalls and the last thing I want to do is deliver a half baked concept. Stay tuned.

There is the possiblity of a market group starting in Carterton later this year. I'd like to share information about what's involved with locals soon, so that it can get off to a good start when the time comes.

I've been thinking about this for the hamilton farmers market but think we will have the same problem as Upper Hutt. I will check it out at our next trust meeting though. It has been in the back of my mind for a while and just need to get the ball rolling. Will let you know how we get on.

We have a Farmers Market here in Upper Hutt and they told me you can only sell what you have grown yourself (FARMERS market...) - unless you form a (growers) CO-OP in which case we could sell on behalf. Sounds a bit complicated - anyone come across this before?
