Hi Fiona

We're out the back of Hunua and Papakura - lol, looking north to the south side of the Hunua Ranges.  I agree - you're welcome to some comfrey leaves to put down under your spuddies - and have a seperate area for growing it - not with the spuds,  in a chook enclosure is a great place - my chooks just love the stuff.  Starting it from a small bit of root is easy enough too.

Hi Jude,

I recommend Stella from Running Brook Seeds (Waiuku). Stella sells awesome garlic - the most reliable and flavoursome stuff. I think she sells a couple of local varieties including elepant garlic. I purchased 20 cloves from her last year, all came up and were disease free. Stella's garden is run on permaculture principles and is full of hertitage varieties - none of that imported chinese stuff. Stella sells through the Clevedon Farmer's Market on Sunday mornings or you can contact her by phone (09 2359138 evenings) or by mail (Running Brook Seeds, 34 Cooper Road, R.D.4 Waiuku 2684 Auckland). Its worth the effort...sadly for me, i loved the garlic so much..i ate all the cloves I saved for this year...oppps

Hi Fiona - I'm not sure if I understand your plan properly, but it may not be wise to plant comfrey somewhere where you don't want it permanently. It grows from the smallest root left in the ground (and they go down deep). I have permanent areas of comfrey, and when I'm planting potatoes I cut the leaves off the comfrey and lay them in the planting area.

Thanks for the suggestion Roxy. Unfortunately I recently ordered some ordinary garlic & egyption tree onions from Kaiwaka and was disappointed with what they sent - undersized, and many cloves soft and/or 'empty'. I emailed asking to return them, and have no reply. I'm not sure if Kaiwaka source directly from Koanga - seems there has been a change in people and a change in quality? So, trying private sources - people who grow themselves perhaps.

Hi Tara, whereabouts are you in south Auckland?  We are in West Auckland.  How many plants do you think you could provide, we want to plant comfrey prior to putting in a potato crop in a largish area?

Hi, does anyone have comfrey plants or seeds to swap for honey.? Alternatively do you know where we can buy a quantity of plants?

Yea, Kaiwaka Organics are better than Koanga, they are around the same price, and they dont require you to be a subscribing member in order to purchase seeds etc. Funny thing is, alot of their stuff is sourced from Koanga too, since Kaiwaka is on the former Koanga site :)
