When and what type of fertiliser do I feed my Cymbidums and Dendrobiums?
Hi Christine, i found you can feed them with all sorts! When the dendrobiums are near flowering, i feed them with tomato feed, otherwise, a coating of Osmocote 12 month slow release is fine for both :)
Some of mine dendrobiums have stated to flower..should I still feed them? Some of my cymbidiums are also flowering...when should I do them?
Wow , Im impressed with how many you have. I have only 8 Cymbidium, do not know their names and several Pink Dendrobiums. They are all the same type. I look forward to be able to get my hands on some more Orchids.
Hi Christine, you have the bug yet? haha, its nothing special really, i know people with 3k+ orchids, and almost every one is different. My list needs a big update, but i will have some for sale soon (if you have trademe, look up 'kiwiorchids' under members, and save the seller, thats me), or i can send you a list via email if you flick me one at jordan@healey.org.nz.
Your pink dendrobium is most probably kingianum too, there are several lines around that have a tendency to produce keikei after keikei! and flower very well too! You wouldnt believe the variety within the one genus.
Hi Jordan,
I am so impressed by your collection. mine is woeful in comparison, and I still love it. I have mainly cymbidiums, some commercial cut flower cultivars, others just ornamentals, and a Dendrobium kingianum, one other larger stemmed kingianum (lost the name), an acid yellow oncidium that lives in a tree, two moth orchids, three different colours of crucifix orchids as well as three cultivars of slipper orchid.
How do you manage so many different species? They must have a range of growing and temperature requirements?
Cheers,
Ingrid
Thanks Ingrid, you are well on your way! Sounds as if the Oncidium may be O. flexuosum, small flowers, little petals/sepals and a large lip? For some reason, i cant grow the Epidendrum radicans (Crucifix Orchid) cultivars, but i do have E. ciliare, a very nice species that grows like a Cattleya, and has large, lemon scented flowers. If you look on trademe, there is a woman up in Kerikeri who grows and sells them. They are slower to grow than radicans, but just as rewarding!
As for keeping them and maintaining them, it is super easy. Only a small handful in my collection enjoy different conditions, and those are the warm ones like Calanthe, Phalaenopsis, Phalaenopsis-type Dendrobiums, Aerangis and Aerides. All the rest of them will happily grow Intermediate or cool, and are very adaptable. I actually need to update as i have new ones and got rid of some. As you may notice, i grow a lot of species, and i am now starting to 'exclusivise' (my own invention that word! :D) in species. If you go onto trademe and look up member 'Kiwiorchids', keep an eye on my listings :) I am getting rid of my more common hybrids.
I have one greenhouse. Thats it. It USED to have a cover, but it was blown off last night and is buggered now. Makes a good shade house though, considering i have shadecloth all over it anyway :) I have a sprinkler system that i employ mostly in Summer, and it can sometimes cycle waterings every 2hrs for 5mins, as the water evaporates rapidly. Its on an auto-timing system. I am about to install a fertiliser tank too, so it takes about a teaspoon of fertiliser out at each watering (thats about 1/30th of the manufacturers directions, as it will already be watered down to half strength in the tank). All a work in progress, all the time, although if your not as into it as i am, you need not go to such extremes haha!
A lot of people are always impressed when they meet me and see my setup and collection considering i am only 17yo
Cheers :)
