A gorgeous evening but cold now the sun has left our patch. Weeded and watered the corn even though we had rain only yesterday as our lovely soil dries out quickly and the corn are still babies - they need easy access to water! Just me for dinner so veges from the garden - steamed and as a salad with a balsamic dressing and feta swapped from another ooooby member. Very nice.

more mulching with pea straw today. Thinned apple trees, which I'm
still squimish about because I feel like I'm taking off too much potential
fruit! Ripped out some of our peas that have finished up, saved some pods
for seed next year. I think I could dry out the old plants in the glass house
for future mulch. Peas are a great success this year. The new lot coming on
now are enormous. Looking forward to the new lot of snow peas too. I've got
baggy cabbages too! This happened to some late cabbages last year. But
the cabbages I planted earlier were fine. I wonder if it is related to not getting
enough cold weather. I don't think they are going to firm up either. Last year I made loquat chutney, my sister loved it! It was o.k., I'm more into pickle and
relish myself. I'll find the recipe and post it up in preserves....
What a gorgeous evening! I'm going back outside!

well last night's dinner was also a success but more predictable - a spicey (largely harrisa based) schnitzel cut into strips and stirfried with brocolli and snowpeas and half a cabbage steamed in the same pan (meat removed then added again right at the least minute), on rice that had a spoon of olivio stirred into it (naughty but nice!). What I would like to know is why my cabbages are always so loose - how do you get them to grow their leaves more tightly packed? Planted the corn seedlings last night and replanted them this morning - will put juice bottle greenhouses over them to thwart the birds. Tied up the broad beans but really must do that when they are smaller next year as I snapped a couple of stems in the process. will pick loquats today before the birds get all of them. Usually make a jam with them, but keen to try something else. I wonder if they would make a good base for a sweet chilli-type sauce? Will have to quickly post a query in the recipes group then get back to work!

My dearest wife and I have been getting the beds ready for all the seeds she has brought and are now at planting point. Shes beena real marvel even though sick she has been out there with me no matter what the project.
As she has mentioned we have installed a rain diverter off the garage and hitched it into the first of 4 25 L tanks we are getting for rainwater to use on the gardens when water restrictions come in, now all I need is the rain to test it. Said to her the other day now its installed we probably wont see rain for months. Such are the games mother nature plays with us humble gardeners.

picked broad beans last night and cooked them slowly in olive oil, onion and tomatoes then added leftover roast chicken, spinach from the garden and feta - my oh my, it was lovely on a herbed couscous. Now facing the need to live up to last nights triumph...it has to involve brocolli and snow peas as that is what is ready to eat. Maybe something more Asian inspired... we have small beans forming on the bush beans and loads of peas, brassicas, carrots and parsnips as well as the broad beans. Must transplant more corn seedlings this afternoon now that the rain has dampened everything down... it might be a bit chilly for this time of year but it is lovely to see everything growing!

pcked silverbeetand rhubarb and made rhubarb crumble for dinner. Planted out some tomato plants - still need to plant out lettuces, capsicum and zucchini and carrot seeds.(last lot of carrots disappeared!) Also picked elderflowers for my first ever elderflower cordial.
