Hello All,

we had a discussion about the Food Bill 2010 here on the board. One issue I have with this new bill is that the section which allows the the sale of 5 liters of raw milk per person per day at the farm gate (needs a RMP)  is not included in the new Food Bill 2010. Talking to NZFSA they announced to me that they are aware of this and they ask for consultation. This consultation paper is now on their webpage. Please read the paper and consider making a submission. And most importantly, please please spread thew word!

Thank you everybody!

Cheers

  • I'm delighted that it seems to be a very sensible document. MAF is clearly wanting to allow raw milk sales to continue, and is recognising that RMP requirements covering raw milk would be prohibitive.

Consumers of raw milk do need to understand the implications of the choice they are making, and "raw milk clubs" can inhibit this understanding as well as increasing the risks due to transportation. In a typical busy farmers market situation, there is often not adequate opportunity for raw milk producers to educate new customers as to the risks of raw milk.

That said, I would like to see allowance for limited "car pooling", where a raw milk customer, having visited and purchased milk directly at the farm gate at least once, may authorise (in writing?) a fellow customer to collect their quota of milk on their behalf, thus saving unnecessary vehicle trips. A practical maximum might be for one person to collect milk for themselves and two others, provided that they can show that this does not significantly extend the time the milk is out of refrigeration.

Also, if a regular farm-gate customer was occasionally unable to travel to the farm to collect their milk, it should not be a serious breach for the farmer to arrange for collection at, say, a farmers' market where that farmer was selling other produce, provided they are not making general milk sales at the market.
