We are in the position of milking a couple, maybe more, house cows and we were wondering if there was any want for sprayfree, non treated raw milk in Christchurch and surrounding areas.

We cannot call the milk organic as we are not certified and to be honest only know that the land is spray free and the cows have had a mineral/worm drench in the last 3 years. in saying this our current practices are organic based. The cows are getting ready to calve so the milk would not be available for at least a couple of months we are just putting out feelers at this stage as to interest.

We would be open to a barter type system rather than money, but money is ok as well. We live in a intentional community in Oxford and would happily exchange work, ie gardening, pruning, even milking a cow, in exchange for milk. If you know how to make cheese a lesson or two could be exchanged for milk as well.

If you are interested please add comments here as at this stage we are looking for interest as to how many cows to look at milking.

Cheers

Hi, I definitely would be interested and I have family in Oxford who could collect for me. I had a nanny goat for a short time but too small a section to feed her, however did gain a little experience in cheese making and have some recipes I could share.
Hi Meaghan

I'd be interested in buying raw milk. I'm already part of a group that gets raw milk from somewhere down near Ashburton. I'm pretty sure that there would be much interest if you could supply at least some of that need. I can give you the contact details of the main guy if you're interested.

Mik
Thank you for that. If you do not want to post his details here feel free to PM or email them.

I am reading over the Food requirements at the moment. Looks like we can supply up to 5litres per person at a time? So being able to talk to someone about what they do would be great.

Peace.

Meaghan.

Hi Meaghan

Sorry for the delay. I was expecting to be emailed that you had replied.

I'll get in contact with this guy.

... and I was waiting for you to email or pm me... the joys of technology and communication.

Sorry about that.
Hi Meaghan

Any update on the milk situation?

I'd be really happy to get milk direct from you.

Still awaiting the 'girls' to calve. They are bagging up and we are expecting it to happen in the next few weeks.

once they have calved I will post here and email you?

Peace

Hello Meaghan,

I've just seen this thread and it's a godsend to me! I'm an amateur cheese-maker (hard cheddars mostly) and I live just up the road from Oxford in Waddington. I have been looking for another supplier of raw milk since my regular provider stopped. I am extremely interested in hooking up to purchase around 10 litres every few weeks. :)

I could certainly do some basic cheese demos, too, once I am fully recovered from recent spine surgery :)

Thx
Helen
Yay for Helen!

There is a group of about 4 now that are really keen to have some guidance, and fun, while learning to make cheese. I was thinking once a fortnight, or once a week if we are keener!, to get together and make some cheese.

In saying that we are more than happy to supply the milk once the girls are milking.

Hi, I've just joined and seen your post. We've just moved to North Canterbury (Greta Valley) and I've been looking for someone with excess milk from their house cow. I thought I'd let you know of my interest, although I'm not sure about the logistics of picking up the milk, given we're a wee way away. I'd also love to join you in the cheese making, if you're getting a group together to learn and experiment. Looking forward to hearing where you've got to with calves etc.

Hi all the cows each day are looking more and more like they are getting ready to calve.

At this stage I think those who are wanting milk need to look at getting some large glass jars, these are easy to clean and sterilise. I found some on trademe for a reasonable price.

Cheers

Meaghan and Paul
Definitely interested, I'm in Hoon Hay.
