Tutoring Mentoring System for Environment Hawkes Bay

Janet Chambers of JJ's Organics has just joined Ooooby and has asked if anyone would be interested in being involved in a tutoring-Mentoring system to help home gardeners through Environment Hawkes Bay. I think it would be a great thing for Ooooby Hawkes Bay to be part of and it would also generate new members. What do others think? Let me know and I'll get back to Janet about it.

I tried to post the details onto the discussion group last week - but I must have failed miserably!
I have posted the e mail sent out to all of the registered people below and if there is any extra people out there that are interested the details are as follows
Green Gardener Training for Tutors and mentors

    HI there all
Thank you so much for your registration to participate in the Green Gardener training this weekend. :-)
There are about 17 willing gardeners registered which is great.

Please bring your favourite gardening book or resource that works well for you, gardening shoes and gloves for the Sunday session.
Lunch, am tea and pm tea will be provided.
    The workshop is free.

The aim is to come up with a Green Gardeners Guild- a group of interested and passionate people with a common philosophy that the Environment Centre can call on to facilitate and tutor courses or mentor individuals. We will aim to develop a simple set of professional standards together to ensure we provide a consistent message to all our clients.

The following is a brief outline of the programme for the 2 days.
Saturday 8th August 10 am to 4 pm (ish)

    10 am - 12 noon
    Icebreakers and personal intros
Introduction to the Environment Centre and the Susd Campaign.
    Defining the philosophical brief.

What are the barriers and obstacles that we are likely to encounter.

1pm - Lunch and Field Trip - we are hoping to visit two different types of gardens in this session. One garden is an established garden and the other an Early Childhood setting.

What is most important to them.

    What are our requirements ?
What resources have we used that work for us and why they work ?

    Composting, worm farming, Bokashi systems.

    Lunch
    Afternoon session
    1.30- 4pm (approximately)

The afternoon session will be a little flexible depending on the identified needs of participants. It could include some of the following -

Knowledge - science behind gardening - inputs

Expertise - who we can call on in the community for extra knowledge

Facilitation skills- developing good tools for tutoring mentoring and facilitation - checklists, time lines, logistics, equipment etc

    Tools and resources available.

    Review of resources currently available

We would love to have a practical session setting up a simple square metre garden if there is enough time and energy.

At the end of the 2 days participants will have an idea of where their interest and skill base lies - tutoring, mentoring, individual one on one etc.. and what level of involvement they might have with the Environment Centre, Sus'd and the Green Gardener Scheme. We will collate this information in our database.

We hope to be able to run further training sessions that aim to cover topics that might be identified as we proceed through the training session.

We look forward to meeting you all and sharing ideas and knowledge.
    Best wishes
