Why hydroponics

In the future hydroponics will be one of the best ways to feed the masses with high nutritional food, grown locally, with a very small carbon foot print.  Some systems such as AutoPot do not use any…Continue

Hi guys

I am interested in Aquaponics Hydroponics in Auckland.

The laws and regulations are AWEFUL, but  they are ways around. Also, I am planning to connect my duck pond to convert it into an aquaponic one instead of fishes. You can steal my idea, fine, but if you are in Auckland lets work together.

I don't grow hydoponically, a couple of years ago a guy called Steven from Ceres city farm in Australia, visited us here at Tui , and he was leading their aquaponics glasshouse & project there. It was very exciting and I became interested in aquaponics for NZ... so I am keen to know more.

Hi Lea an welcome. So we now have six members. How many of you actually grow hydroponically?

Hi Don. It depends on the size of the system you are planning and also do you want to harvest the fish. If you are planning to harvest the fish then there are a lot of grey areas. The first place to start would be your local DOC office as there are a lot of protected fish. We are just using cold water pet fish at the moment, mostly comet, as they are very hardy. We only have a small system for testing, but soon we are going to increase the size of this and start with fish, fresh water muscles cray and other edibles. We will check with DOC and the Ministry of Fisheries as the list of what we can use changes occasionally, when we do or if you find out sooner we will post it here. Cheers Shaun

Hi guys.  Just wondering which species of freshwater fish we can grow in aquaponic systems in NZ.  Any thoughts would be most appreciated.  Cheers, Don
