The bed in the foreground is the saffron bed after it has been buried in layers of mulch. The corms are dormant now and will sit there over summer and hopefully produce lots of flowers late March early April. Usually I just mulch with pea straw but we had lots of wood chips delivered to the community garden so used that - it was free:) No need to water the bed again the beginning of March and will only do so if it doesn't rain.
thanks Hester, part of my original planting stock came from Terraza Saffron who aren't that far away from you so your planting conditions should be fine plus you have a very green thumb! They have taken a while to establish and so long as they don't get overwatered, they seem to thrive on benign neglect!
Thanks Hester, the flower production will be set back this autumn from thinning the corms but the ones that were planted deeply ought to still flower ok whereas the corms that have been planted more shallowly will produce more daughter corms according to this research paper http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.1080/01140671.1997.9514002
Have replanted the corms at two different depths, the holes go down to about 15cm and the corms on the surface were covered with about 10cm soil. Tomorrow, will fertilise with sheep pellets and comfrey leaves and mulch with grass clippings and woodchips.
