Hi there,

have learnt that not everyone is receiving the ooooby gathering messages I've been sending via this website, for some reason...  so thought I'd better touch base and see if you are getting them, and if not - if you'd like to be in the loop just give me your email address and will fwd them that way ;)

normally there are backyard gatherings the 2nd sat of each month between 10am-12noon, and a great way to share produce and swap seeds etc :)

this month is sustainable backyards month, so we have extra events - we had a stall at the nashi harvest festival at the arty house in tepuna early march, which was fun :)  and a gathering at the mount community garden last wkend.

this weekend on sun 16th we'll have an ooooby share table as part of the stalls at they sydenham botanic reserve in otumoetai, 1-4pm.  (hopefully the weather will work out)  and sat the 22nd we'll have an ooooby share table at the envirofest family funday/workshop day at the historic village 10-3pm  ;)

might try some sunday gatherings from april to see how that suits people and that gathering will probably be at Jane Powel's in Papamoa that month, she's the one who often runs the 'make your own probiotics' and cheesemaking workshops.

hope you are enjoying 2014, and look forward to seeing you if you'd like to come along sometime :)

- if you would like the gatherings emailed, you can send your email address in a private message, by either clicking 'add as friend' at the top left of my page, or text it to my mobile 021 064 9814 ;)

Good Morning Ally and "Welcome" to the new Funk & Flash group! I hope you check out the current discussions and I'll keep you in my mind to help find inexpensive recycling ideas for planters for you. Your doing such a wonderful job in your courtyard garden! Check out the discussion on vertical gardening, if you can't spread out, go up! Cheers!

Yeah thanks for the contact... but the guys is doing really well on his own and I think it what really keeps him fit and healthy, so do not want to get in the way of that now. Thanks for the offer though.

Thank you so much. I love doing the unusual!
Yes, I plant really close - stops the weeds. i have planted dwarf beans in between the lettuces so that as they mature there is another crop coming in. My husband complains I plant too much but I can always give them away! I just love the challenge of growing.

Upside down? The theory is that the tomatoes are off the ground and will not get splashed up infections from the soil. They sure make a good talking point not to mention that the old clothes line is useful again!

Re poly containers. I reckon if you go to somewhere like Countdown or New World they would be only to happy to get rid of them. Tell me how you get on!

After having the luxury and joy of gardening on a lifestyle block last year I'm now determined to grow as much as possible in a courtyard garden... I have about 5 square metres of 'dirt', pots, various things I've turned into 'pots' and plan to plant directly into bags of potting mix... so far I have bok choy, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, celery, capsicum, boccoli, peas and strawberries

On a happier note...

Our first (magnificent!) head of broccoli has gone forth to feed the multitudes... my gardening buddy very proudly took it home to feed his family....

Walking along the street in town today we found a polystyrene box blowing down the footpath..perfect for planting in... so we rescued it ... rather nervously .... expecting someone to come running out demanding their rubbish back...

then managed to score a whole lot of pots from the Sallie army store for 20cents each!...

Unbelievable water waste

So much for my feeble attempts at conserving water... nearly everyone in this subdivision is watering their lawns morning noon and night... I had no idea this is what people with perfect lawns actually's astounding!

I'm shocked... and almost speechless... for now.

The coolest thing...

As much as I'M thrilled at the progress of my little garden and must confess am rather over excited at every tiny little jump the carrots are suddenly sprouting... the broccoli is growing bigger every day... strawberries are constantly appearing .. the pea plants are waaay tall.... potato greenery has developed overnight... so many wonderful tiny miracles are happening every day...yet the most wonderful thing of all is that the garden isn't just belongs equally to the wee… Continue
