A Tohunga's Natural World: Plants, gardening and food

Paul Moon has attempted to present the material without judgment and as he says, "the way Maori traditionally imparted knowledge such as this was not through rigid instruction, but by allowing people to observe how things were done." The book is short and easy to read and should be useful to anyone who has an interest in holistic gardening…See More

I want to experiment with tropical and subtropical crops this summer. I'm thinking things like okra and snake beans. Does anyone have any advice, sources for seeds or seedlings? I live in central Auckland.

Back to basics, one fire for a weekend of community meals

Michael Pollan wrote in the New York Times about the community eating experiment he participated in recently: build a single wood fire and, over the course of 30-plus hours, use it to roast, braise, bake, simmer and grill as many different dishes as possible — for lunch, dinner, breakfast and lunch again.

Los Angeles restaurant gets in the Ooooby spirit

In LA, the restaurant Forage take the concept of "locally grown" to a new extreme. The restaurant's Home Growers Circle allows Los Angeles residents to trade produce from their backyard plots in exchange for credits at the restaurant.

Hi Andre
Thanks for your comment. I know just a wee bit compared to most of the tree crops members. If you come to the Tree Croppers, I am sure they will share their incredible knowledge with you.
Please also have a look at this website www.fruittrees.org.nz . Forward to many many. The Mt Eden Village People will present this list of interested people to the city council to support their demand of growing more fruit trees on council land.
I have put forward the other successful SLIPS application to plant 44 fruit trees on Otahuhu's grass verges and the trees have gone in this week. I have personally attended the planting of two Monty's Surprise apple trees and one Mandarin tree.
check out www.fruittrees.org.nz
cheers, Ellen
