Hanna commented on Sealander's group Southern Seed Exchange
"Well, as it turns out the flowerseeds people aren't based in NZ, in spite of the NZ domain name, so that was a bit of a blind alley. Will keep you updated if I find anything else though. Interesting to hear that you say there are no problems…"

"Hi, thanks for all the tips. I'd be very interested in some plants, if you have any surplus, Ben. I have also found these people http://flowerseeds.co.nz/buckthorn-hippophae-rhamnoides-seeds-p-96.html. I didn't know about this company…"

"Hi, does anyone know a source for sea buckthorn plants or seeds? Does anyone grow it and if so what is your experience with it? I have a 'bed of death' where everything struggles. I think it's the neighbours giant hedge sucking up all…"

"Does anyone want some fresh angelika (archangelika) seed? I took the plant down today. I've only just sown some seed myself, so don't know how viable it is, but I guess now is the best chance."

Hanna replied to Libby Bird's discussion clipping chickens' wings - advice? in the group Poultry in Urbania
"Wing clipping is not that difficult and it does slow them down, though it doesn't stop them completely. We also found it helps to have two people, so that one can concentrate on holding them and the other on clipping. You only have to do one…"

"Thanks for the advice, Justin. I googled blossom wilt and think it's more likely my peach had some frost damage, at least that's what I'm hoping for.. I do have one completely healthy looking cherry nearby. On the other hand my just…"

Hanna commented on Janet Luke's group Poultry in Urbania
"Hi Kelly, that's awful. I too have had some dog trouble with my two chooks in our urban backyard. Dogs are really attracted to them, they can probably smell them from quite a distance. My chickens are now in a run with 1.5m high fencing, which…"

Bartering Local Food, Learning
Tell us about your garden and what you're growing
We are relatively new home and garden owners and are working towards making our house warmer and more energy efficient (mainly my partner) and transforming the garden to grow more of our own food (mainly me). There is a lot to learn, but it's fun and rewarding. I also own two chickens who are very useful both for eggs and entertainment.

I'd be interested in exchanging poultry sitting services, if there is a chicken owner nearby, and in swapping food and seeds - I have a mild seed addiction. We both hold firearms licenses and are always on the lookout for a chance to shoot some rabbits for the pot.

Hi Hanna, I have little angelica seedlings popping up today :)

I saw your question about covering your greenhouse, we bought some of this stuff http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=542540182 the sellers would cut to any size, although you might have to ask as they don't have this listed at the moment, they have other things also that could do the job. we found it cheaper than mitre 10 and this particular stuff was good because it can be nailed down.

Hi Hanna, I noticed your comment about the food bill. Scares me to. There is a bit of information about it on the 'self sufficiency' group under 'can a community legaly be self sufficient?' just thought you might like to know :)

Hi Hanna

Love your profile picture :-)

Re warming your house, sounds like you could do with the services of an Eco Design Advisor, Chch appointed one 1st July see http://www.ecodesignadvisor.org.nz/plan-reviews/ I've found the one in Hamilton really helpful, runs courses as well as one-to-one consults.
