Ingrid Ennis commented on Denise's group What To Do Today?
"Weeding weeding weeding! Unbelievable weed growth after the drought was broken. Now its time to get some more compost onto the vege plots where the early maturing broccoli has been harvested, and more lettuce, spring onion, cauli and broccoli…"

Ingrid Ennis replied to Laine's discussion What fruiting plants like wet feet? in the group Food Growing Q&A
"Hi Laine, You could try Tamarillo and/or guava there, if you are frost free. They would love the shelter and full sun. If you are unsure about the trees coping with wet feet raising them up on a mound even 20cms can make quite  difference to…"

Ingrid Ennis commented on Flo's group Composting
"Hi Peter, Viruses are mostly spread from a living, infected plant to another plant by either insect vectors (aphids, thrips etc.) or when we or other animals brush past an infected plant or trim it with secateurs and transfer the sap onto another…"

Ingrid Ennis commented on Denise's group What To Do Today?
"It's a wonderfully abundant time of the year in the vege garden, that is for sure. Jane you mentioned courgettes rotting at the tips. this is usually due to poor pollination. Nothing you can do about it, except remove the rotting fruits.…"

Ingrid Ennis commented on Hester's group Growing Under Glass
"I would be worried about using diatomacious earth widely - it seems to be a pretty indiscriminate killer of every insect. I want to have a healthy ecosystem in my garden. Maybe its good for very localised applications?"

Ingrid Ennis commented on Denise's group What To Do Today?
"HI, Today I harvested some of the last silverbeet from an autumn planting for my breakfast to have with eggs. The silverbeet is all going to seed now so no more big leaves to harvest. the new seedlings are in though, so they'll be productive…"

Ingrid Ennis commented on Denise's group What To Do Today?
"Broad beans can be harvested as soon as you like. the smaller beans are sweeter and the larger ones have a stronger flavour. I usually pick mine when I can see the bean shapes inside the pod and the pods are thicker than my thumb. but sometimes I…"

Ingrid Ennis commented on Denise's group What To Do Today?
"Its a great time for sowing summer veges now in my garden, the beans, kamokamo, lettuce and others are germinating well. So satisfying! One thing I've noticed about bean seeds (and basil seeds too) is that they have a really short shelf life. I…"

Ingrid Ennis commented on Denise's group What To Do Today?
"I hear the forecast for this summer is for a much sunnier one than last summer. It seems the conditions used for these predictions are now the opposite to this time last year. Here's hoping! Although last summer was great for anyone grazing…"

Ingrid Ennis commented on Denise's group What To Do Today?
"A bit late but better than never - today I pruned the hydrangeas. Whew. It would have been better to do it earlier, to cut the stems that have flowered back to a couple of nodes above the ground or main stem, and to leave the ones that didn't…"

Ingrid Ennis replied to Jordan Healey's discussion Jordan's Orchids in the group NZ Orchid Experts and Amateurs
"Hi Jordan, I am so impressed by your collection. mine is woeful in comparison, and I still love it. I have mainly cymbidiums, some commercial cut flower cultivars, others just ornamentals, and a Dendrobium kingianum, one other larger stemmed…"

Ingrid Ennis replied to Ricardo Oscar Marques's discussion Prunning Grape Vine in the group Pruning
"Grapes are pretty tough, so what ever you do to them is unlikely to result in permanent disaster. The best book I have ever seen with excellent advice about pruning all fruit trees is: Temperate and Subtropical Fruit Production by David Jackson. I…"

Ingrid Ennis replied to Genie @ Bunny Eats Design's discussion Where to find celeriac? in the group Seasonal Recipes
"Hi, I hope you found some celeriac. In the past I have seen it in Nosh stores at this time of year. However it is harvested in autumn, so it will have been stored over the last few months and may look a bit less fresh than you'd like. It will…"

Ingrid Ennis commented on Denise's group What To Do Today?
"Harvesting the last cauliflower today means the end of autumn planted brassicas. The slugs will be sad to have no big juicy leaves to much on any more.  The peas are growing well now that its a bit warmer and today I leant the seedlings towards…"

Ingrid Ennis commented on Isabell Strange's group Pruning
"Pruning is something that seem quite daunting. The main concepts are; Never prune off more than a quarter of the tree. When you have old and overgrown trees just take your time. Its okay to take a couple of years to bring them back to how you want…"

Ingrid Ennis commented on Denise's group What To Do Today?
"Wow sun! Winter sun is so precious and we have it in abundance today. The broccoli is ready to harvest now and for a few weeks. I love growing broccoli and other brassicas for winter harvest, that way I don't have to do anything about…"

I have a small urban garden on relatively heavy soil. There are 4 raised vege gardens, about 4 sq m each. There is a grapefruit, lime, mandarin and lemon tree, and a feijoa. There are also flower beds with a mix of small shrubs, roses, perennials, bromeliads, bulbs and annuals.
