Kelly Hobbs replied to Libby Bird's discussion clipping chickens' wings - advice? in the group Poultry in Urbania
"This youtube video shows how it's done. Definitely  helps to have someone else hold the chicken.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fobZbe8hSc After they molt you'll need to do it again, but by then they might not be so interested…"

"Thank you for the kind responses. I've had a good look around for them but the attack happened at night so I don't think they had a chance of escaping. I think I need to invest in a proper gate to start with. Currently the gate is a piece…"

"Two weeks past we had a chook keeping disaster. I haven't been able to write about it until now. During the night a dog got into the chicken coop and ate all six of my chooks. I don't know where the dog came from, I'm guessing it was…"

"I have four urban chickens, all heritage breeds. My orpington is the best layer but she is the noisiest and the most aggressive. Perhaps she isn't the best example of her breed. Also I find that since she has so many fluffy feathers, she can…"

"Our Barred Rock is our best layer. Almost always an egg a day even in the winter. She isn't a light breed but isn't as huge as our orpington. I'd get more barred rocks if we had the space."

Kelly Hobbs replied to Kelly Hobbs's discussion Hedgehogs using automatic chicken feeder in the group Poultry in Urbania
"I don't think a platform would stop the hedgehogs, they are quite good climbers. They weren't in the feeder last night. I think I need to trap them and relocate them. I wonder how far away they need to go to not return."

"Janette, I will try your method with the rock I think. Getting up early is not my favorite but if that is what it takes to discourage them I should try. I'm glad that they are not eating our eggs yet, I found one sleeping in the next box one…"

"Watch out for hedgehogs, they are nest raiders!  Wire fences are no problem for them to scale over. Not to mention very effecient killers of native lizrds and insects. I have no sympathy for them and kill them if I find one around our…"

Hedgehogs using automatic chicken feeder

My chickens have one of Grandpa's feeders where they stand on it and it opens for them to eat. While in the training process some hedgehogs also have figured out how to use the feeder and now they are continuing to open the feeder at night eat all the chicken feed and poop in in the feeder! Anyone had hedgehog issues? I have managed to catch and relocate one but they don't come every night and I haven't managed to catch any others but it is obvious they are still eating the chickens feed as…See More
