Gary and Margaret - Kiwimana replied to Maree W's discussion More than one Queen in the group Bees
"Hi Maree, First off I would remove the Queen Excluder over winter or place it below the roof, you don't want the cluster of bees moving up and leaving the Queen or in your case Queens behind. If it was a summer I would say move the other Queens…"

"I have heard (and tried) hanging camphor balls in the trees.  Supposedly the possums hate the smell.  I can't say definitively that it worked, but I think they helped. It is worth a try.  Good luck"

More than one Queen

I took out the varroa strips from my hive today, and had a check.  The frames in the bottom box were very mouldy, so I have removed them, leaving the box empty.  Built a stand to elevate the hive about 30cm also, hopefully this will improve airflow and ventilation.  Second box is looking good, lots of bees and honey and new brood. Bees are still very active. However, when I was moving the boxes, I found a queen above the queen excluder.  I put her back down into the brood box.  I then found two…See More

Avodado agony

I have two avocado trees that are not doing well.  These are mature trees, they have dropped most of their leaves, regrown very small pathetic looking leaves, and are not fruiting well.  I think it may have phytophera???  Does anyone know of an organic cure for this?

Golden Kumara

I decided to harvest my Golden Kumara this weekend.  Compared to my purple kumara, the golden has given a much better crop.

One kumara sprouted on a windowsill, in a tyre with compost.  When it was sprouting through the soil, another tyre went on top, and filled with more compost.…
