"Yesterday I had to pull out 3 tomato plants because they wilted then died. I think it was due to Verticillium and Fusarium wilts. Another 3 plants look they are going the same way. Just as harvest was starting to take off too! I will need to find…"
"Thanks Melanie. I have duly rubbed my cheese with the salt solution and moved it to somewhere cooler (and hopefully less humid). The instruction set to leave it on the kitchen bench covered with a mesh cover but I think it may be better off in my…"
Growing and do things the old way.Do you grow your own vege, make soap, use herbs, cut your own firewood, long for the pioneer days where it literally came from your own back yard. If you do then this is the group for you.See More
"I don't have an answer for you but am interested to see if someone else has. We converted a boggy area to a pond about 25 years ago and were keen to have fish for eating but after some research put it into the too hard basket."
"I have made my first hard cheese - Wenslydale - using a Mad Millie kit. I am due to wax it on Tuesday but it has started growing mould! Mad Millie says to scrape it off and rub with salt water. I have made a saturated salt solution and guess I will…"
"Yes, I freeze tomatoes. I don't bother with blanching - just cut them in half and put them on a tray in the freezer. WHen they are frozen I put them in a bag and I have free-flow tomatoes. I use them in any cooked dish that calls for tomatoes.…"
"I harvested my first new potatoes today and there are 2 zuchini on the plant in the glasshouse that will be ready to pick tomorrow. Also in the glasshouse I have little chillis on my overwintered plant and my first tomato flowers. This is my first…"
"Khaki Campbells are the breed to go for egg laying but getting a really good egg-laying strain can be a bit difficult. Mine started laying again a couple of weeks ago and will usually lay till just after Christmas but the ones I had about 10 years…"
"What do you plant in your glasshouse over winter? This is my 1st winter with a glasshouse. I have a couple of tomatoes, a pepper and a chilli still hanging on and a cucumber plant that hasn't flowered yet but i have 2 empty pots and am…"
that's great that the messages are working :)
all good, we have been planning to arrange some sunday gatherings after this month and see if that suits people better, and our last event of this month is this sat at envirofest, has been a full month with lots on! Melbourne sounds like a cool place.
Look forward to perhaps meeting you soon :)
have learnt that not everyone is receiving the ooooby gathering messages I've been sending via this website, for some reason... so thought I'd better touch base and see if you are getting them, and if not - if you'd like to be in the loop just give me your email address and will fwd them that way ;)
normally there are backyard gatherings the 2nd sat of each month between 10am-12noon, and a great way to share produce and swap seeds etc :)
this month is sustainable backyards month, so we have extra events - we had a stall at the nashi harvest festival at the arty house in tepuna early march, which was fun :) and a gathering at the mount community garden last wkend.
this weekend on sun 16th we'll have an ooooby share table as part of the stalls at they sydenham botanic reserve in otumoetai, 1-4pm. (hopefully the weather will work out) and sat the 22nd we'll have an ooooby share table at the envirofest family funday/workshop day at the historic village 10-3pm ;)
might try some sunday gatherings from april to see how that suits people and that gathering will probably be at Jane Powel's in Papamoa that month, she's the one who often runs the 'make your own probiotics' and cheesemaking workshops.
hope you are enjoying 2014, and look forward to seeing you if you'd like to come along sometime :)
- if you would like the gatherings emailed, you can send your email address in a private message, by either clicking 'add as friend' at the top left of my page, or text it to my mobile 021 064 9814 ;)
Hi Penny :) that's a shame you have to work saturdays! it's taken awhile for us to evolve, but finally things are drumming along nicely and a lot of people are really getting into it.
At this stage we are going to stick to the saturday as we are trying to make it a routine, so that it is easy for people to remember and because that day seems to suit most people at the moment, I will definately let you know though if there is ever a gathering on a sunday, and would really recommend contacting individual members through their individual pages on here. That's how a lot of people end up sharing info & swapping individually and getting to check out eachother's gardens on other days and making new mates ;)
Hi Penny. I'm from Yorkshire at the moment, but am actually and Australian who lives in New Zealand normally. I will be returning to Waiheke Islandin September. Ilkley Moor ba'tat. Now there's a Yorkshire icon.
