Petra Dirkx replied to Kirsten's discussion neem oil in the group Poultry in Urbania
"I have used neem oil in the chook runs.  I use a knockdown spray 1st to kill any live ones out and about and then the neem oil for later.  I found this was much more effective and long lasting.  Neem oil inhibits fertility so using by…"

Petra Dirkx replied to Nigel Thomson's discussion Dealing with a muddy run in the group Poultry in Urbania
"I have the same problem every year, this year I have let them out into the orchard to free range and it isn't nearly as bad as it could be.  But I am about to lock them up into their breeding groups so it will quickly become foul muck…"

Petra Dirkx commented on Janet Luke's group Poultry in Urbania
"You shouldn't have too much trouble introducing some chicks or point of lay pullets to a group of Bantams,  Ideally you would keep them separate initially but so they can see each other and get used to the idea that there are others, then…"

Petra Dirkx commented on Janet Luke's group Poultry in Urbania
"Meredith it is the wrong time of year to be buying fertile eggs.  Fertility drops of from December onwards and many chooks will be starting to moult about now.  If you want the best results I suggest that you wait until October before…"

Petra Dirkx replied to Laine's discussion Egg Troubles in the group Poultry in Urbania
"Have they got access to shell grit?  They need this to form their egg shells. It is quite hot at the moment so they may slow down a bit.   Also intestinal worms and blood sucking bugs (lice & mites) affect egg production."

Petra Dirkx replied to Dirt Doctor Jacob&Hana's discussion No eggs for days! Broody hen? in the group Poultry in Urbania
"LOL sounds like a broodie hen to me. Take her out of the hen house tonight (once its dark) , and put her in a box (wine/beer box will do) with some nesting material in it, put the box in a safe  darkish place and put a lid on it so she…"

Petra Dirkx replied to Melissa Gunn's discussion Head shaking in the group Poultry in Urbania
"Sounds like mites or lice - dust with pestene or use 1drop of ivemectin pour-on drench per kilo of body weight on the bare skin under the wing. Treat all the birds. You could also try putting Diatomacaous Earth in the dust bath and on the perches,…"

Petra Dirkx commented on Janet Luke's group Poultry in Urbania
"Or a Leghorn - make sure you get one from a good laying line. Even an Aracauna would be suitable - you can't breed purebreed shavers (they don't breed true) so any light bred rooster from a good laying line would be suitable. An…"

Petra Dirkx replied to Susie Trinh's discussion Automatic feeders. I'd like to be able to go away for the weekend! in the group Poultry in Urbania
"Nosloc feeders are great and save you money in wasted feed as well. No more feeding the sparrows ;-) Buy direct from their website and save them a TM fee."

I am currently trying to establish an Apple (and other fruit) Orchard with the aim of making cider for personal use.
The vege garden is also a WIP, and we hope to put in a large maize and pumpkin crop this year to help with the stock feed.
We run enough Sheep, Cattle, Goats and Pigs to keep the freezer full and I breed rare breed chickens which provide an abundance of fresh eggs.
