I am new back in nz, have bought the 1/4 acre with house, and am now ripping out all the pretty succulents and weed matting, to replace with a food forest.
the hive you are probably talking about is the 'top bar hive'. There are heaps of DIY vids on youtube, and check out these websites that have PDFs on how to build and the benefits:
Ive also seen pics of hives being made out of huge clay pots (or any vessel like a window flower bed) with a hole drilled in it using the top bar method. Im looking out for the right vessel to recycle into a hive to see if it works.
