"Yes, they are thriving, in the earth now and about 1 foot high. I have started another round, will move them out of the direct sun per your advice"

"Hi Heather, I wondered what was the upshot of your test for arsenic etc in soil, as we just built a tannelised trellis to grow passionfruit, boysenberrries etc on and were going to include a bed at the bottom where the tannelised posts go in. (No…"

"Hello, I hope you've been successful with your Impatiens cuttings. They are generally easy to propagate.  Ideally cuttings should be about 4 nodes long, and planted in a pot in pumice, coarse sand or similar. Its important to get the…"

"I can't see a problem. Tamarillos are a member of the tomato family anyway and so have similar water and fertiliser needs."

OK to put tomato plants in same raised bed as 1.5 meter tamarillo tree?

We made a big 1.5 m x 1m raised planter of composted earth (to make it easier to avoid digging too far!) and planted the tamarillo, it has flourished. Now I need space for two tomato plants and I put them in with it this morning, but thought I better get some advice. The tomatos are small enough to move again, only about 10" tall.Is this going to be bad for either of them? I am feeding both the same tomato-rite fertilizer anyway, and keeping them close will save water.See More

"Hi Susan, I have some seeds from my garden in Ellerslie that I could post to you. They just come up and grow wherever each year. They seem pretty hardy and have quite a shallow root system. Cheers, Catherine"

Wrong time to plant Impatiens cuttings?

I want to grow Impatiens from a cutting - in December on Waiheke. It is now flourishing everywhere nearby, on similar sloped land facing the same way as my section. Is it possible to grow it from a small cutting? How big exactly? I have rooting hormone to paint on the cut stem, is there any other advice anyone can give on how to do this.See More

Tell us about your garden and what you're growing
I just moved to a steep bush section on Waiheke Island, with a little space where I want to do some fruit and vegetable growing. I am growing Passion Fruit and Tamarillo for the first time and Tomatoes that I've done before, for now. I am a novice at gardening, and just moved back here from California, and I don't recognize a lot of plants - and can't tell plants from weeds and pests - and am here for advice! (As well as plant swaps)
