Tomatoes

So, my tomatoes were doing really well up until we had all those thunder and lightning storms a while back. All the wind and heavy rain knocked them over (the inadequate staking may have had something to do with it as well...) and by the time I got round to staking them back up (4 days later with taller stakes), blight had set in. Lots of green tomatoes fell off as I was staking them back up, so I made some green tomato chutney. Most of the leaves died on the tomato plants, but a lot of the… Continue

Cabbages and kings

I’ve been trying to work on having food available for beneficial

insects this season. I usually have a good patch of borage, but this

year I’ve been firmly stepping on my tidy-freak instincts and leaving

things like old celery and fennel to go to seed, as their umbrella-type

flowers are the perfect landing pads for parasitic wasps. It may be my

imagination, but I think I’ve had less of a problem with the aphids

they feed on this summer. I only had one real case of… Continue

Just thought these might be interesting to some members. They are available from Amazon (I don't get a cut or anything if you buy them!). There might be a way of purchasing them collectively even?…

Community Gardens in seaside suburbs of Christchurch - Sumner and Redcliffs

Sumner Bays Union Trust has two community gardens under its umbrella in Christchurch. They are Sumner Community Garden and Redcliffs Community Garden "The Onion Patch". Each garden is different and defined by its physical location. Redcliffs is located on a former children's play area behind the Union Church on Augusta, and the Sumner garden is located beneath a cliff face behind the Anglican Church on Wakefield Avenue. Both have a core group of locals who work on the…

Gardening in Dunedin

Well we are in Dunedin and I have inherited a glass house, so that is good news. We have parsnips and carrots in the garden with peppers and tomatoes in the glass house. The tomatoes were looking rather sad, but I might get something off them.

Last Tuesday before leaving Hastings I picked a large basket of veges, didn't manage to pick all the tomatoes which was a shame, but I guess I had to leave something for the tenant. We are still eating our way through the basket and the…

Help me out in the Dream to Reality environmental goal competition!

I've had my entry accepted in the Happyzine Dream to Reality environmental goal competition. The competition called for entrants to submit a proposal based on an environmental goal they'd like to achieve in their community this year. The winner will get mentoring, support and publicity to achieve their goal.

My proposal is establishing rooftop food gardens on apartment buildings in Auckland's CBD.…

Future BeeKeepers & First Honey Harvest

I managed to squeeze in quite a lot of bee time over the weekend. On Saturday I took Alex up to have his first proper look at our bees. I picked up a second hand child's bee suit for him and Melina to wear, and

it does look cute. I also thought a six year old boy would quite like being in charge of the smoker. …

Glen Innes Sunday Market

I am out of date about this. Saw it a few months ago and it was dire, about 3 stalls and no people. Checked it again yesterday and there are maybe 30 stalls and no room for parking.

Its humming. Maybe time to consider a second Ooooby Market stall. Any Eastern Suburbs producers and Oooobyists apart from Angie and me?

Incredible Edible Todmorden

I've just noticed an interesting British website that may interest Oooobyites.

Incredible Edible Todmorden aims to increase the amount of local food grown and eaten in the town. Businesses, schools, farmers and the community are all involved. Vegetables and fruit are springing up everywhere. Public flower beds are being transformed into community herb gardens and vegetable patches.…

It's all in the soil

I enjoyed a wonderful day on Waiheke last week with my dear friend Tony Murrell. It was such an energising and uplifting time. This guy really knows his stuff when it comes to gardening. During one of our earlier conversations he harped on the importance of soil when it came to making anything work in the garden. It's all in the…

At last a Washing Machine!

After going without for about 3 years, my good neighbour gave me a washing machine, It doesn't work yet, but I think I can fix it. The first job though, is to build a new Laundry as my old one is storing a couple of arm chairs, the hens are laying eggs in them and I don't want to disturb a happy routine..

It's all part of a bigger picture..

I need water for my trees which are suffering in this drought we're having on Waiheke. The thing is, I probably still have plenty of water in… Continue

Monarch butterflies

Thanks for the feedback re the butterflies. Last year we raised about 75 - 80. I'm sure they were here around about this time. I can't get the website recommended. Is it going to be too late for them to breed before the frosts???
