Getting Kitted out for Bee Keeping

I love bee keeping, it is the only time in my life I have been a size 6!

Being new to bee keeping I have gone for the full zipped hood bee suit. Some may think it is overkill, but I really dont like stings. This suit is like a white cotton boiler suit with an attached zipped hood. It has elastic at the ankles and wrists to keep any wondering bees out. We Have Baby Chucks!!

Our peking duck eggs have hatched. Our clever and very patient hen has been sitting on 6 duck eggs for the last 28days and is now the proud mother of some very cute babies. they look like little bundles of yellow fluff. They are already running about trying to catch flies and paddling in puddles, much to their mothers distress. She may be a first time mum but she knows chicks don't normally like water!

We are rapidly growing and I am keen to keep the focus of beekeeper education to help those experienced in keeping bees and those who are new to the hobby to come together in a place where they can share hints, tips and experiences to help protect and expand New Zealand honey bee population.

Why are we different? We are NZ based, specifically for NZ Beekeepers. We have no affiliations, no preconceptions and are not attached to a specific club, company or organisation, so all viewpoints are accepted to allow greater eduction amongst the community.

Mine is made of macrocarpa also. The chap who made mine is keen to make more , also from the Barefoot Beekeeper plans. It is ok to start bees in the summer, you may not get much surplus honey but I don`t keep bees for that reason, the honey being a bonus, the pollination is my aim, if the weather is good, ie plenty of rain and sunshine, you might be surprised, but you do have to leave plenty for the colder months, unless you plan to feed sugar and water, which is something I avoid.

Where did you find out about the TBH ? The BareFoot Beekeeper is a great website, I downloaded the plans for the hive from there, also brought Phil Chandler`s book.
