I have a large urban landscaped garden with a wide range of shrubs, trees, annuals and perennials.     I wonder if you can put grass clippings on the beds when they come through without touching the stems to suppress the weeds?  Might just have to try it & see if it will affect the conditions of growing the garlic.     My hubby travels to the KDC everyday for his work too & still likes the drive.  I have still got loads to learn about gardening cos I didn't plant nearly enough veg to see us though the summers months- like when i ran out of cucumbers I didn't think to stagger any of the veggies as well as tomatoes, lettuces  & loads more.  Just assumed the planting season was over & went without or bought fresh.  Don't know what made me think that when I know you can plant veg all year round.  Silly, thinking about it now as I've realised there is no hard & fast rules of planting veggies from seed or seedling...just do it really.  My greatest win though was planting loads of early & late season potatoes. I have only now just bought my first bag of potatoes from the shop this year!  And I am finally "getting the stagger thing" with growing brocolli & other winter veg thru the winter.  Still, at the end of the day it's times like this  when reflecting over past experiences can actually improve next seasons knowledge. Loving your compost photos...wish mine would hurry up & get like that hehe.

    Hi Rex, I'm just wondering what you put over your garlic beds as mulch to stop the weeds?  I've planted the stronger variety this time instead of the elephant garlic hoping to get a good crop next year.  I don't have weed mat down like Ive been advised as I would rather something natural that would eventually breakdown.   Any suggestions?

    Hi Rex
    The reason people plant cougettes and curcubits into mounds is that it provides good soil drainage. We have dry summers often and i don't really find it is necessary.
