Every year the National Beekeepers’ Association of New Zealand holds a National Bee Week. This year, Bee Week will take place during the week commencing August 20.
Bee Week is a major campaign designed to educate New Zealanders about the importance of the humble, often overlooked, honey bee. Bees are critically important to New Zealand and to the New Zealand economy – much more so than you might think!
Without bees, two thirds of our everyday food would disappear, our gardens would be without many of their plants and flowers, and our major agri-export industries (worth around $5 billion) would be in severe trouble.
Bee Week has been established to highlight the value of honey bees and beekeeping in New Zealand.
This year’s Bee Week will highlight that while bees in New Zealand are not under immediate threat, as in some overseas countries, they do face challenges and they do need to be actively protected and preserved.
This year’s Bee Week is all about providing the public with practical tips and advice about what they can do to Love Our Kiwi Bees.
Bee Week is a way to raise the profile of bees and the beekeeping industry in New Zealand, with a public awareness programme that includes media liaison, giveaways, beekeeper visits to schools, and printed materials and activities for children - including a colouring competition, word find puzzle, and
fun bee facts.
This year, beekeepers will also be lobbying their local MPs and Councils, advocating for safe spraying practises and encouraging them to plant bee-friendly plants, to ensure the health and safety of our bees.
Media giveaways and competitions also play a part in Bee Week, so keep an eye out in your local paper for the chance to win some great honey and bee-related prizes.
Colouring competitions can be posted to the NBA at PO Box 10792, Wellington 6143. All entries received before 24 August 2012 will go in the draw to win some awesome prizes from Buzzy Bee. Competitions will be judged in two categories: age 5 – 8 years, and age 9 – 12 years.
So get involved! Spread the word and show Kiwis how important honey bees are to New Zealand.

The NBA would like to give special thanks to Maureen Maxwell of Wild Forage Ltd who has donated proceeds from the sale of Wildflower Bee Friendy Mix seed packets to support National Bee Week 2012.
Wild Forage in collaboration with Wildflowerworld.com has packed a Wildflower Seed Rescue Remedy for Bees. This low growing mix contains 17 bright and cheerful flowers that will seed down and spring back into life each year. An asset in your garden, orchard or hedgerow, but a lifesaving source of nectar and pollen for NZ bees.

The NBA would also like to thank those companies that have generously donated products to support National Bee Week 2012.
