  • hi Lorraine, thanks for that. I had and elder recipe but had no idea it did all those things and its great to know it keeps for three months.
  • I have a recipe for which is good for

Aphids, carrot rust fly, caterpillars, mildew, fungal infections (on plants) crown rot and black spot.It keeps for 3 months and appears to be working well on the black spot and Aphids.

It is 2 cups chopped elderberry leaves

    2 litres water

    Simmer 30 minutes

    Strain - spray as needed

  • Have you tried Diatomaceous Earth?

To insects DE is a lethal dust with microscopic razor sharp edges. These sharp edges cut through the insect's protective covering drying it out and killing them when they are either dusted with DE or if it applied as a wettable powder spray. If they ingest the DE it will shred their insides.

It's all organic, just don't breathe the dust in.

  • Hi :

We are setting up our Flexi tunnel hydroponically. Small trough has capsicums, tomatoes, and chillies. Argintinian ants are nesting in the plant roots, inside the Pando. 50% vinegar slowed them down, organic coffee grounds did not seem to help, the colony moved. Any pearls of wisdon ? Cheers, Dian & Dennis

  • Hi Steven just found this recipe using stinging nettles which repels aphids, reduces mildew and is a good foliar feeding spray and liquid manure. Cut the tops off nettles and leave the roots to grow on. Cover stems and leaves in water and bring to the boil. Hold for about about 10 minutes. Cool and strain. Dilute to the colour of weak tea before use. The sludge can be tipped on the compost heap. This mix seems a bit more palatable than washing water.
  • spraying on washing water saved from doing the laundry used to work quite well as a temporary measure (has to be repeated every couple weeks) on my roses. I am not sure about these new aphids (which weren't around when I started gardening) which attack salad greens.
  • Hey all :)

Anyone know of a good not-too-harmful DIY way to get rid of aphids? I have aphids on some of my plants (parsley, cape gooseberry, puha [yes, a "weed", that's also nutritious and medicinal]).

    And any ideas about what encourages/attracts aphids (eg unhealthy-plants / sub-optimal-soil ?).

    Thanks :)
  • Just found this recipe for white fly infestation from Awapuni Organic Nurserys e newsletter, did see a request on ooooby somewhere for advice.
    1 cup soya bean oil
    1 tablespoon dishwashing liquid.
Place both ingredients in a jar and mix well. Add 30ml of the mixture to 1 litre of water and spray affected areas every seven to 10 days until whitefly is eliminated. Repeat as necessary.

Thoughts on mosquitoes

Nobody likes mosquitoes and I've been thinking about some natural controls. The eggs are laid on water. They hatch and the wrigglers live in water for two or three weeks as they grow. Then the third stage, the pupa, also lives in the water. Finally the adults emerge. We are discourged from leaving stagnant water around the place, as it's an ideal place for the females to lay their eggs. However, if we were to encourage them by leaving bowls of water around, then empty the water (compost heap…

Baking Soda Spray

To make: Mix 1 tablespoon baking soda, 2 1/2 tablespoons vegetable oil with one gallon of water. Shake this up very thoroughly. To this mix add 1/2 teaspoon of pure Castile soap and spray. Be sure to agitate your sprayer while you work to keep the ingredients from separating. Cover upper and lower leaf surfaces and spray some on the soil. Repeat every 5-7 days as needed.
