There are at least three varieties of hardneck garlic here, all have white outer wrappers, one has large bulbs with a single layer of 4 large cloves with vivid purple striped clove skins; a large multi layered bulb with large outer cloves with clove wrappers lightly tinged with purple and a small multi layered bulb with smaller cloves. All the bulbils differ too - in their size, colouring and shape.

thanks Joe! The bulbils were covered with a layer of commercial potting mix followed by some pea straw pellets. Not sure that they needed the latter over winter but it'll certainly help to retain the moisture over summer. The soil mix is an experiment, didn't have room for the bokashi bucket contents in our vege patch so made a lasagne of bokashi bucket waste; garden soil followed by worm casts. The bokashi contents are a bit acidic when they're straight out of the bin so that's why I put garden soil over them before adding the worm casts (which had lots of worms in them & am hoping that they'll finish processing the bokashi waste). I read that bulbils don't compete very well with weeds so figure it'll be easier to identify weeds if the garlic's in nice straight rows and hopefully, I can keep the varieties separate. When I harvest the bulbils, will let you know what the soil looks like and whether it'll be any good for planting another crop in.

have since planted two more poly boxes of bulbils. Layered the contents of two bokashi buckets, garden soil and worm casts as the planting medium & covered one with pea straw pellets. Shoots are visible in the box that didn't get covered with pea straw and when I carefully poked around under the pea straw, found lots of shoots emerging. Am looking forward to eating and sharing the harvest!!
