Getting calcium into our soil

We have been working hard to get our soils back in tip top shape and I thought i would share with you a  rather easy and cheap way of getting calcium into your soil.

Calcium is an important element in any soil food web and without it plants cannot function to the best of their abilities. Therefore it is crucial that we focus on getting our calcium levels up.

A process avaliable to most home gardeners is as follows....

We save up all our bones from soups, broths and so on…

Our world is not for sale....

A great video that is a must see for all...Dr. Shiva is an amazingly talented environmentalist that is fighting for India from the ground up, speaks very truely from the heart.....every action has a reaction and in the case of the multi national seed companies its just plain wrong!

Summer is here!

Well the last few weeks in the garden have been rather scorcha....have not been out in the garden during the day. Rather waiting till the cool evening.

Am very exicted about this years summer garden. lotsa new experiements with growing and the garden is singing with lotsa good insect life.

Main crops going for it at the moment are the phacellia, calendulas, garlic and going to seed silverbeet. THe phacellia is absolutly pumping with bees and hoverflys. A crop i reccomend to…

Glorious excess of rain and dreams of spring.....

The last 36-48hours has seen torrential rain falling down all over the East Coast and Hawkes Bay....everything is well soggy and the underground water levels are rather high, so much that tanks are starting to overflow and things arent looking too good at ground level.

One thing I really need to make a priority on my wish list is a couple of big barrels that I can plug a tap in to the bottom for my rain water. We currently have a spout that is not attached to a down pipe, and…

Winter Solstice garden actionings

The random weather combined with mass assignments all due at once has seen my garden action days somewhat limited the last month.....but with the last project handed in and many a beauts day lately, ive been reminded of just why i got into gardening in the first place, and how nice it is to just lose track of time and be outside getting amongst it.

Its so easy to get bogged down in non-action gardening life, reading books, making plans.... but to be back with my hands in the soil…

New house, new garden!

Work has finally started on our vege patch at Stanley Road.

We moved here over Easter weekend, then went to visit the folks in ChCh for a week, so up until now have not had the chance to do anything. There are still boxes in various corners of the house and garage that need to be…

There's a mouse in my compost!

Eeekk I just went out to check on my brew and as I lifted the lid a tiny mice was staring up at me. For about 10seconds we were both frozen in fear until I put the lid back on and ran inside. I’m not a big fan of the little critters and am quite creeped out by the fact they are in my compost, is this a bad thing??…

Small garden goodness

The weather has been so hot and muggy here the last few days, but it’s so nice to be outside in the garden come evening time when it cools down a bit.

After a weekend away it was awesome to come back to my garden and see all the new growth. I’m told it rained quite a bit here on the weekend which is great, as it really is so dry up here, especially with the wind. Naturally my garden flourished in the wet weather, and it was cool to see that my scaloppini’s have turned giant! Roasted them… Continue

Psyllids, what are they like!

Its been a great year so far, but work has dominated my days so I've been trying to get out in the garden everyday when I get home. Oh to be off work everyday, and a fulltime gardener : ).

Tis another windy day here today in Gizzy and Im looking anxiously at my upside tomatos hoping they dont snap off! They seem to be doing very well otherwise, most of the leafs have turned up and theres a few flowers about. Its great, all my neighbours keep looking over the fence, and are keen to… Continue
