still no supermarket

Ok - so we're still not going to the supermarket and it's been an interesting journey so far.

I've managed to find so many local providers - including some of the supermarket wholesalers - so avoiding the middle man.

This week the most wonderful find was a capsicum grower - beautiful brigtht red capsicums - then a friend of mine didn't like the olive oil that he had produced so we got it at a lovely price - it's peppery and grassy- just wonderful.

So I'll be preserving…

Supermarket showdown

After much consideration, we have decided to go as supermarketless as we possibly can.

Living off the garden and preserves, only raw milk and our egg money pays for the butcher - other that what can be hunted.

So,,, with this in mind, I am going to give some courses (one each month) with a limit of 5 people - as this is all my kitchen can take. Each month would concentrate on what's in the garden and how to make it and sampling of course (this is vital - cause how will you know… Continue

fizzy fun

This week has been about making lots of ginger beer, elderflower champagne and loquat syrups. Next on the list is rhubarb fizz and rosepetal lemonade...mmmmmm..

It seems like alot I suppose, but it means that we can entertain for the cost of the sugar or honey that goes into the bottles. oooh - and remember to keep any softdrink bottles that people have finished using so you can make your own - if you cant use them, I know lots of people who will.(including me).. so pass them… Continue

food is about friends

As I was gutting 3 massive boxes of kiwifruit last night - it occured to me that the whole reason that we do all of this work is not only to feed our family - but to be able to share what we have with out friends and family. A sense of community and belonging is a natural part of being human and without it we are a little lost - don't you think?

The garden is happily growing fast, unfortunately that also includes the weeds. Time to head out when the weather settles and start making… Continue

roses are for eating

It's time to catch the aromatic blossoms before the wind takes them.

Strawberry and rosepetal jam are on the menu this weekend and as the elderflowers are plentiful we should all be making elderflower and rhubarb syrups or jams. I always add whiskey and grapefruit juice to the syrups... tastes like a thick mulled wine!! yummy.

I've taken some photos of the blackcurrant flowers emerging from the greenery - they are so beautiful - just what you see in the old hedgerow photos… Continue

free meat

well - we don't just eat vege's - we're econivores, so that includes meat too.

I've just plucked and cooked wild duck. It was all ok until I had to take out the intestines -ooohhhh!!!

Tomorrow I'm giving braun a try. If the family don't like it then my nana says she will eat it.

I'm getting an organic pigs head for $2 so its cheap eating with a victorian recipe.

I'm also picking up beef bones and chicken carcases that they would normally throw away for making… Continue

digging up the front lawn

I've finished digging up a considerable part of my front lawn to start growing more winter vege's. I really hope that I can just keep with the inevitable weeks - kaikuia (speling?) particularly!

We're only on under an 1/8 acre of rental property in Mt Albert. We're so grateful that the landlord is happy for us to keep a garden as we please and stops in for the occasional vege or flower for home.

The strawberry plants are sending out lots of runners and are thriving. Now it's… Continue
