The wind quit, and the chill off the snow fields on the mountain is intense. I havve brought in everything that isn't firmly planted in the earth as it seems like it could frost. I hope that I can get this garden really kicked in. One thing I have found is that if you put compost on as a top dressing your roses go wild! I planted rainbow swiss chard (silver beet) today and hope that it comes up in spite of a cold evening. Sunday I planted golden zuccinni and think I may have gone over board on it. We also made a raised bed on the really shady side of the house. We put down cardboard as a weed barrier, filled it with about half dirt and half compost. This should make it really happy for the hosta that is going to be transplanted there this weekend. I don't know what else will grow here in 5b in shade that is so deep. It does get a peek of sunshine around 2 in the afternoon for about a half an hour, so I will need to get creative to fill it I think.
