The food and drink manufacturing sector is the single largest manufacturing sector in the UK. Virtually all of the processes in the modern food system are dependent on cheap oil and therefore the price of our food is directly linked to the price of oil. Over 50% of fossil fuels used in agriculture are fed into the production of fertiliser, currently vital to maintaining domestic food supply.
Less intensive, local food production may give rise to new ’slow’ localised economies with a new value given to domestic food production. Demand for home grown vegetables could increase, whilst organisations consider fertile soil a more valuable asset to invest in and preseve than previously.
