Thanks Robert - must be gravity? The fence would also stop the worms chewing the underside in contact with the soil, as well as increasing the area in production.

I didn't know that pumpkins were supposed to be round till I grew these on a bamboo trellis! They hang fine without stockings or anything!

Im not sure how long theyll keep - some started rotting in the dark garage, especially if the skins were damaged by ground contact. I wonder if commercial growers dip them in fungicide?
