October in the Glasshouse.

Everything is growing flat out. I'm potting on seedlings now-Tomatoes, Basil, Peppers. I've got flowers to pot on or plant out too-Aquilegia, Poppies, Phacelia, Calendula. There is celery and shallots to plant out. The containers of tomato plants will need to start going outside to be hardened off before they are planted outdoors. Bring them back into the greenhouse if it is too cold at night or there is a drying wind and gradually get them used to outside conditions. The stems will redden when they are more resilient. All tender plants benefit from a gradual transition to outside conditions before the weather is consistently warm. Watch out for late frosts. I've got large plants of courgette, tomato, pepper, basil and cucumber that will stay in the glasshouse and provide me with early produce. And some exotic plants-Uluko , Galangal and Lemon Grass, enjoying the warm environment. I have more tomato varieties germinating, sweetcorn, and chillies, plus more basil. I've recently sown aubergines and some more varieties of chillies. This week I will sow zucchinis, and some beans. The aphids and white fly have arrived. They are mostly on the nasturtiums are self sown in the base of the glasshouse. So they are working as a decoy plant. I've mixed up some Neem soap spray to deal to any that spread to the plants. Hopefully the parasitic wasps and ladybirds will take over soon and the aphids will be history. I find there are always a few in the Spring once the sappy growth starts on the plants. I don't panic any more. In a balanced organic garden it is usually a temporary thing. The predators get to work and the aphid population declines. It amy take a few seasons to build up your predator population. Use organic sprays and companion plants to controlthe pests in the meantime and make sure your plants have the right conditions-water, light ,soil and position to keep them healthy. Pests attack weaker plants. Seaweed foliar spray helps deter pests and feeds the plants. To make Neem soap spray grate some Neem soap, about a tablespoon full, and put it in a spray bottle (recycled cleaning product bottles work fine.Wash them out well first) Pour on very hot water to dissolve the soap, shake it a bit to assist the process. The mixture should be a bit frothy when you shake it. Fill the spray bottle and leave to cool. Then mist over the foliage of affected plants. You will need to repeat the process for a few days. As the weather warms up I need to be diligent about watering, as things dry out very quickly in the glasshouse. I check at least twice a day, mist the seed trays and water any containers that need it. The seed trays need some cover over to keep them moist.I use pieces of plastic cut from shopping bags or half of the type of plastic containers that sushi and other food are packed in. Don't throw those clear plastic food boxes away.Separate them into halves and place over your punnets. They make great covers for germinating seeds, as good as bought propagators I find . Recycled meat trays make good trays for under the punnets and pots. What's happening in your greenhouse?

March this year l was lucky enough to find a house with a glasshouse!!! It has taken me ages to get it happening but finally l have and have felt quite proud and terrible special when we ate some of our produce!
Currently we have tomatoes, onions, spring onions, cucumbers, aubergines, peppers, 4 types of lettuce, peas and snow peas! Also l have 3 orchids which were ill but have now picked themselves up! A herb corner with mint, oregano, greek basilicos, chives, thyme and sage!
About two weeks ago l built two garden boxes out in the yard and planted the broccoli, cauli, 3 types of carrotts, celery, parsley, green and butter beans, white onions, lettuce, and cabbage which all started of in the glasshouse!! Everyone told me it was too early and that the frost would kill them! Wel l have to disagree as they are off to a flying start!!! They have doubled in size as we have had 9 days straight of rain and parts sunny and they have loved it!!!
l am really happy to have found this group/site/and you!!! lt has given me beautiful inspiration. Have a wonderful evening!
