Agreed systems and practices - "The Rules"

Here's my first stab at putting together "The Rules". I might have got some of them wrong, and I'm sure I've forgotten some. For example, I know there were a whole lot more conditions around using the Orchard.

Chip in with changes and additions.

General

  • Working bees are on the third Sunday of the month, 12–2pm. Meet at the Aro Valley Community Centre.
  • Mini working bees are each Sunday, 10am–12. This is for anyone who feels like gardening between the main working bees and wants to do it when other people might be there.
  • Planning is at monthly pot luck dinners, notified through the email list.
  • To join the email list, email: [add email]
  • Communication is via Ooooby ,.. the email list ... or ... [to be decided]
  • At working bees, when people move out to work at different sites, post a note on the door of the community centre so latecomers can find the group.
  • Tools are in the shed behind the community centre. See Charles for the combination to the lock.
  • New plantings are marked on the map, and labelled with physical labels on the garden bed.
  • Pick anything you want, but don't pick all of anything.
  • There's a garden notebook (in the Secret Garden fridge) for recording activities and observations for future reference.
  • Tie a ribbon on any plant you want to save for seed.
  • Plants we don't define as weeds: dandelion, nasturtium

Secret Garden

  • You have to join KOA to be told where the Secret Garden is.
  • Don't pick the figs! These belong to the property owners.
  • Don't walk on the deck!
  • We can use the tap next to the house (up the steps beside the garden). Tidy the hose away after use. The neighbours over the fence behind the compost bins will also let us use their hose.
  • Put noxious/invasive weeds in the big terracotta pot to stop them spreading.

Park

  • This is to be gardened by the Aro School after school programme.
  • This area is public—anyone can pick stuff from the Park.

Orchard

  • We garden this area with permission from Victoria University, the landowner.
  • There's a rubbish dumping problem here—to avoid attracting more, keep it tidy and don't store materials here.
  • The university will remove rubbish if asked, but only want to make a few large collections a year, not lots of small ones.

The New New Site

  • We can use the tap of the neighbours in the pink house.
  • The back corner of the bank is a skink garden.

  • Joanna,

this is awesome! Seeing our decisions laid out like this makes me realise how much we have achieved.

So shall we continue to add any suggestions to this discussion and then sit down with them all at the comms meeting?

Yes Lynsey, let's have a good weed session. I would love to host this and arrange for some GWRC staff to come and assist us. Sound ok? sometime in may?
  • Thanks Joanna. Very helpful.
I'd love to know for sure what the noxious/invasive weeds are, at least to be able to recognise them by sight. There are weeds in this area I've never seen before. Some of them might be beneficial (soil signifiers etc). How do others feel about having a weed identifying session sometime?
