Tell us about your garden and what you're growing
We have half an acre of cold garden that is regularly whipped by the southerly winds from our Wellington friends. We get the meanist frosts in Auckland, though our soil is black and good. We have some very old trees including an old pear that got a battering last spring; an old hedge of feijoas, camelias and roses. Most things I grow have had some significance or memory link to a past garden. This year we are concentrating more on our increasing vegie garden. Growing well is broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, silver beet, celery, garlic, spanish onion, parsley, chives and basil. Agria potatoes will be going in in September (when the frosts have gone I hope). Our philosophy is if we dont grow it then we dont buy it! Our philosophy is a promise based on good nutrition, eating fresh, reducing our carbon debt, knowing what is going into our soil and plants, and retaining a choice on our food resource for the future. This years 'piece de resistance' is a huge circular bricked strawberry garden for visiting children and grandchildren. The garden, with a Golden Delicious at its centre, is divided into four segments by four brick paths with 25 strawberry plants in each segment, and well accessible to little hands when the berries ripen!
