  • thanks Gordon am so glad your tree is healthy - only another 3 years to wait for it to fruit:) Did you manage to germinate enough stones to share a couple of trees with your friends? Look forward to seeing photos of not just your blackboy peach but the rest of your garden too.
  • hello Gordon, have just uploaded a photo of the germinated BBP pips that I planted back in March. They're in a mix of garden soil and worm casts and I covered them with twice the depth of the stones. I didn't crack them open, just covered them with soil and left them out unprotected over winter.  Have had excellent germination with all my stone fruit pips and have grown seedlings of black doris plums, Moorpark apricots and BBP, white fleshed & golden queen peaches and sour cherries (Fanal morello cherry). I have budded onto two of my apricot seedlings this year - my very first attempt at budding. I won't know for a few months whether they've taken but have plenty of seedlings to practice on.  Am so envious that you have chanterelles growing near you - they don't seem to grow in the southern hemisphere, haven't eaten any since we lived in England and we'd go on fungus forays in Wales or buy them from the markets in France.
  • hello Gordon, took a poke around the pot that my BBP stones are in & found a couple of germinated seeds that were sown six months ago.

When your BBP stones arrive, no need to cosset them, mine have been out in the open and been frosted and snowed under so are pretty hardy. Just put them into a pot and wait for them to grow!

  • Not a problem, will get them into the post to you. Don't worry about the postage, will keep an eye on your page and if I see anything that you're growing that I'm interested to try, will ask. If I'm given any more BBP's next summer, will send you a few more stones, I've been fortunate and had good germination of my stone fruit but these have been sitting around a few months.

Is that a bowlful of chanterelles you're holding? If so, did you gather them yourself?

  • hello Gordon, welcome to ooooby! Yes, I still have 9 BBP stones as well as some italian plum, white nectarine & apricot stones which you are more than welcome to if you want. I've invited you as a friend so you can send me a PM with your address. Let me know whether I should declare the seeds when I post them to you - not sure whether the Canadian equivalent of MAF are as strict as NZ:)
