Comment by Lisa Preston on March 31, 2013 at 4:39am Hi there , I grew one plant not very successfully a few years ago in South Brighton , but I am also going to try again , Ive heard that putting corrugated iron under the plants helps somehow. I didnt do this but the plant grew ok just got knocked off by frost as I planted too late I think.
Comment by Mariana on March 10, 2013 at 11:42am Has anyone grown Kumara outside here in Christchurch? The tangata whenua grew it down here and I’ve heard of it growing in Port Levy and Ilam
Does anyone know if there more cold tolerant cultivars?
Any tips/experiences/failures/successes would be great! (And yes, I know it's not the time to plant it, I'm planning ahead ;-)
Hi, I wonder if anyone has any tips for what sort of material to use to cover a small greenhouse. I can't quite warm to the standard clear polythene, it looks flimsy and also quite ugly. I thought I'd use some plastic sheeting, but the stuff that Bunnings has is not exactly cheap and also only 1m wide. I sort of stumbled into this project (someone gave me a planter box and it went from there), so I'm woefully uninformed...
Comment by Justin JX on November 22, 2012 at 6:03pm When I first arrived in Banks Peninsula 2 years ago, we had a very hot Spring, at this time of the year working in the orchard we would be sweating and drinking lots of water. However, last year and this year, its pretty gloomy and chilly. Right now, I'm still going to work in a jacket and long pants, instead of t-shirt and shorts. I felt like I am robbed of my Spring.
So, my question is, what is the norm? Is Spring usually more of a Wintery Spring? Or a Summery Spring?
And for those who are born and bred in Christchurch, what is the seasonal pattern usually like? 4 warm Spring and 1 cold Spring or 4 cold Spring and 1 warm Spring?

Comment by Steven Kung on November 4, 2012 at 8:49pm From these people I've learned of the great benefits of allowing so-called "weeds" to grow, and consuming these weeds in some particular ways that are tasty and easy. Makes gardening so much easier, and makes your health and wellbeing so much better!
