Community Garden - Transiton Town Waihi

Hi All, i just wanted to let the Waihi Oooby members know that Transition Town Waihi (TTW) has been loaned some land by the Goldfields Railway to create a community garden. For any of you interested it will provide us with a place to meet and swap ideas and plants in real time. There would be room for lots of different crops depending on our time and energy. I will keep you posted on what is happening but we plan to have a working bee within a couple of weeks which would include ploughing the first patch ready for planting in spring. However, smaller patches can be put to use straight away and Mary's silverbeet and lettuces would be most useful. I will come and see you after the weekend Mary if you still have any left. Cheers, Shane.

  • Kia Ora is this still happening.. and if not lets get it going again..even a small curbside plot we've got room outside our house. Sheesh if land and room gets too political guerilla gardening might have to be the way to go! I know WCRC are getting something going outside their building too.

    Love to hear from anyone

  • Hi this sounds really intersting, when contemplating the move away from Thames the community gardens is one of the things we are really loathe to leave. My Wife and son go every week for the Thursday morning session and I have helped to build the potting shed superstructure (later infilled as part of an earthbuilding course) and an extension to it. We were also there for the establishment of the first raised beds, which are to be replaced with some more adobe beds very soon.

The engagment of community groups (schools, supported lifestyle trust, organic strategy group etc.) has been a great feature of the gardens as has been the self funding educational component. I hope that we can enjoy this too.
  • Hi Shane, my rotary hoe is still available if you need it for the working bee, but I will need someone with a trailer to get it there (my truck officially dead - anybody got a cheap diesel station wagon with towbar for sale....?). Look forward to catching up.
  • Yes well I've had no takers yet and I've potted out eleven 6punnets of each. There are also heaps left in the garden where they self seeded so I'm sure there will be plenty. I was going to offer them to the community garden. I know you are thinking of potatoes but these would be good to be going on with though from past experience they probably won't do much until spring. I will be out Monday morning but home most of the rest of the week except when I'm shopping or going for a walk so you are welcome to come and get as many as you like. I would also like to have a look at the plot.
