Tell us about your garden and what you're growing

3 years ago my garden was just a simple lawn. Then I met Jake who has transformed it. We now have a patio, lots of hanging baskets, a greenhouse for tomatoes, peppers chillis etc, and raised beds where we grow a variety of different vegetables inculding: potatoes, carrots, cabbage, broccoli, squash, leeks, onions, herbs and more. Jake has recently planted some winter veg, and he is going to construct some higher raised beds that I can work on next year.

  • hello Karen, hope you're well. Would love to see updated photos of your land project. How's it progressing?

  • Hi Karen - you're an inspiration! I love the north of England, and I have seen beautiful gardens in Yorkshire, but I think it would require real dedication to garden there. I live in the North of New Zealand which is temperate, and working outside is pleasant for most of the year.
  • Congrats on the progress Karen. You guys are such a great inspiration and example.
  • The pots are really sturdy packed up against each other but once you remove them from the tray, they collapse (which is good thing when you come to planting them) but means that you need to ensure that the seedlings all have similar germination times. I put some rocket in the middle of a tray, not a good idea, they emerged first and it was fun getting them out! Not a problem if you're planting an entire tray of the same variety, I only have a couple of small raised beds.
  • Hello Karen, here's a link to one of the many youtube video's on how to fold these pots. I don't bother with sellotape, just use a letter open to crease the folds really sharply and fold the flaps in. Half a sheet of a tabloid makes the size pots in my photos. Gee you're a night owl....

  • hello again Karen, have just uploaded a photo of the string of chilis in our kitchen
  • hello Karen, it's fiddly but strings of chili's look great hanging in the kitchen. When harvesting them leave as long a stem as possible and using a sharp pointed needle with large eye (chenilles are good), thread them up with linen thread. Pass the needle through the thickest part of the stem (where it joins the fruit).
  • Karen. I came to the Media Centre meeting and would be interested to come back to a meeting and learn how its is developing, what speakers do you have planned in the coming weeks? I'm looking to develop a wider project in Leeds.

It would be really helpful if you e-mailed me at work J.Preston@btcv.org.uk as I haven't mastered the oooby system.
  • Hi Karen.
Pete might have told you, he's found a speaker for the next meeting. I'll work on Ben for the week after

  • Thank you Karen. How did you know?
