Tell us about your garden and what you're growing

I have an extremely small space to garden. I have raised garden beds which require a very organised approach of crop rotation to enable me to produce what I need because of lack of space. I have been organic for many years and have just started planting by the moon this season. With many hours of TLC I have managed to produce almost all the vegetables we have eaten since October.

  • Hi Kim :)

have learnt that not everyone is receiving the ooooby gathering messages I've been sending via this website, for some reason...  so thought I'd better touch base and see if you are getting them, and if not - if you'd like to be in the loop just give me your email address and will fwd them that way ;)

normally there are backyard gatherings the 2nd sat of each month between 10am-12noon, and a great way to share produce and swap seeds etc :)

this month is sustainable backyards month, so we have extra events - we had a stall at the nashi harvest festival at the arty house in tepuna last wkend which was fun :)  and a gathering at the mt community garden yesterday.  next weekend on sun 16th we'll have an ooooby share table as part of the stalls at they sydenham botanic reserve in otumoetai, 1-4pm.  and sat the 22nd we'll have an ooooby share table at the envirofest family funday/workshop day at the historic village 10-3pm  ;)

might try some sunday gatherings from april to see how that suits people and that gathering will probably be at Jane Powel's in Papamoa that month, she's the one who often runs the 'make your own probiotics' and cheesemaking workshops.

hope you are enjoying 2014, and look forward to seeing you if you'd like to come along sometime :)

    - if you would like the gatherings emailed, you can send your email address in a private message, by either clicking 'add as friend' at the top left of my page, or text it to my mobile 021 064 9814 ;)

  • yes the gatherings took awhile to get going, but as of early last year we've been having them monthly, :)  generally the 2nd sat of each month, which everyone's been enjoying.

re boxes, Rebecca Jenkins in our group is starting them up in Tauranga, you can find her via the group page, and can contact her on her page if you want to get in touch.

you're more than welcome to come along to any gatherings, will update the details early next week and send a message out to the group, you should receive it via email, from this site.  :)

  • Hello Kim :)

just letting you know that we are merging both of the tauranga groups on this website, because the bigger one is the active one, so we are in the process of deleting the smaller group now.  Feel free to join the larger tauranga group if you like, there are mthly gatherings in eachothers backyards which is really neat :)  you can find it listed at the very top of the page if you click on the 'groups' link.

    have a good week ;)

  • Hi Kim, Thanks very much for getting in touch! Sorry I've been so long getting back to you. I do have lemon balm and have recently learnt more about how useful it is. I have quite a few other herbs and I'm very happy to give you bits of them. This morning I put a comfrey root poultice on my daughter's badly-sprained ankle. She finds it comforting, specially with a hot water bottle on top. She is moving around on it much more freely now and I think the poultice is helping her. She was pretty tender this morning so I'll have to compare with how she is tomorrow morning after a night of inactivity. My husband sprained his wrist some time ago and it still twinges him so I'll have to put a poultice on that too. It's great to be able to do something that seems effective and is free!

    All the best
    Brigit
