Tell us about your garden and what you're growing

We have just moved from the city to the country and have a hectare of growing potential! We've just harvested the last of autumn crops (thanks to previous owner :), are planting our winter veges, and planning our spring crops and herb garden. We have fruit trees in place (just made a tonne of quince paste...) and more to go in the ground. Am slowly learning what my nana knew well - the joy of standing over a pan stirring boiling preserves.

  • Yep our honey has a wonderful taste - quite deep and complex. If you notice it crystallizing at all, warm it gently. It is something all raw honey does when it is cold. I thought since it will be Xmas before we are taking honey off the hives at your place that you would like a sample of homegrown to try. ;-)
  • Hi there eggs are fine next visit. Our place is a moat, what a downpour this afternoon. Stay dry - Cheers Kristen
  • Hi Mary, have checked the hives today. I have left a couple of boxes by them to use as a stand to put the hive boxes on as i am checking them so i dont have to lift them from the ground - back saver! I will be back early next week to replace lids and crown boards when new ones available. the bees are very busy. Lots of new nectar in the top box. that should be our honey harvest in about 3 months - Kristen
  • HI Mary, great to see everyone this morning. I have used one of your bouqui garni's this afternoon to flavor a lamb stew.' out of your back yard and into mine!'
  • I'd be certainly interested in a weekend meet- thanks Mary
  • I work during day so that is out for me sorry
  • I'd love to meet- just say when
  • Hi Mary again, I've been thinking and It would be ok to have the meeting here in that week after the holidays. then we could talk bees, chooks and supplying the stall. I have a couple of non ooooby members that might want to be part of it too.
  • Hi there thanks for the reply. I have my own stuff etc for the market so no worries, just wanted to give you the option of making a little bit of cash. Yams are $6.99kg in the supermarket I noticed. so $3 for a sandwich bag would be a go.

Can you ask Hamish, and think on it yourself too of course, how you would feel about a hive or 2 somewhere on your land. I have just purchased 2 more from a bee club member. We haven't picked them up yet and they are currently in Ohariu Valley. Initially they will come here but I will be looking to place them somewhere else soon. Could give you a share of the honey collected. That way you get the benefits without having to do the tricky bits. Happy to talk to you both about it if you are interested. Regards - Kristen
  • Hi there have you had a chance to dig any yams? I can collect tomorrow, and dig them up if your not able to find the time too with the little one. Let me know - Thanks - Kristen
