Trees for Bees

For those of you looking to add trees to your garden/habitat there is a great list here.

http://www.treesforbeesnz.org/

Federated Farmers has established the ‘Trees for Bees NZ’ campaign to ensure that honey bees have the opportunity to gather sufficient pollen and nectar, providing the vitamins and minerals required to maintain optimum hive strength and a viable pollinating bee force. A great thing is the ten Regional Bee Plant Guides, the result of collaboration between Federated Farmers, Landcare Research, the Oceania Pollinator Initiative, and many beekeepers, farmers and nursery owners.

The trees are attractive to bees, preferably native (or alternatively non-invasive exotics), and practical for farmers to grow.

  • Thank you for the link... was a bit surprised it said not to plant gorse, when last night on the news there was a segment on bees and the lack of pollen, and it said bee keepers were asking farmers to plant gorse... I was sure there are other options then gorse... and there are :) thanks again for the link.

  • That's interesting. So why don't the Fed Farmers educate their members a bit more in the area of pesticide use, alternative methods and avoiding pesticides which kill bees? Is this just an alibi to say "Hey look, we do something"?

    Just wondering.

    Cheers
